JOKE - The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance arrives outdated and already outperformed

Yawn. Another IS with the same basic 5.0 liter naturally aspirated V8 from Lexus? Back in 2007 (14 years ago) when the Lexus IS F launched with the 2UR-GSE 5.0 liter V8 it would at least pose somewhat of a challenge to the lighter and sportier BMW E92 M3 and the larger displacement W204 C63 AMG.

AMG had Toyota easily outgunned in output and displacement while BMW offered a DCT, a manual option, and not only the lighter, better balanced, and quicker car but the best sports sedan in the segment.

How did Toyota fire back? By waiting to 2014 to repackage the same basic drivetrain in the form of the RC F. By this time BMW M and AMG moved to turbos. AMG even gave you a V8 with twin turbos on top just to send a message.

So, Toyota was and still is outgunned. What kind of heat are they bringing for the 2022 model year? The kind that already got BMW M and AMG's dust kicked in its face over a decade ago.

Seriously Toyota, the 2UR-GSE naturally aspirated 5.0 liter V8 again? This is embarrassing. Just ask BMW for one of their V8's. Your most exciting car is just a reskinned BMW anyway at this point.

472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque moving an even heavier 3891 pound chassis around? With the same 8-speed automatic? This is comical. Somehow, they are going backwards.

Everyone knows you are cheap Toyota but putting a different skin on the same crap and calling it new is not fooling anyone.

To your point just as they used the BMW B58 for the Supra, Toyota/Lexus should have used the BMW N63R from the 2020 M550 xdrive: 523hp and 553ftlbs of torque.

Its not a bad idea, use BMW engines for their higher end performance models. Why invest money into it, they make most their sales from their SUVs (RX, NX, UX, GX, LX) and less expensive sedans (ES and IS).

They won't sell many IS500's just like they didn't sell many GS-Fs

Then again they could have put in their 3.5TT engine (they currently use in the LS500 with 416hp) and tune it up to 500hp or something respectable.

I actually like it on the basis it's different from the other options in the segment. If they had paired this to a proper DCT instead of an auto I think it would be a winning recipe. I'd still take this over the new 4 cylinder, 4400 lbs AWD C63... This will at least excite me when I start it up.

It offers something different but it's nothing new. It's actually a step back with the higher weight.
