This is sad news as the Volkswagen Beetle is iconic and really the model associated with the Volkswagen brand. VWBoost reported last year the model was on the chopping block and as of this week the last Beetle rolled off the assembly line.

The new Beetle did not do quite as well as VW hoped and it is a shame they did not produce enthusiast models such as the R Concept. If the Beetle had a Golf R style sibling who knows how its image might have changed.

Of course there will be argument about whether the Beetle should only be a rear engine model to truly be a Beetle. Maybe Volkswagen should design one more in line with the classic engineering elements if they are to do it again at all?

Volkswagen's Mexican plant will be re-tooled to produce a new SUV.
