OFT (Openflash Tablet) coming for the BMW F80 M3 and F82 M4 S55 platform

The more competition the better, right? Well, BMW F80 M3 and F82 M4 owners will soon be getting an interesting tuning option. The OFT or Openflash Tablet differs from options on the market precisely because it comes with a tablet.

You might be saying, why do I need a tablet if I already have a more modern tablet that works with options like MHD? Well, that is a very good question.

Here is what Openflash says sets them apart:

    • No Vehicle, or VIN# Licensing
    • No Software Licensing
    • Free Off-The-Shelf (OTS) for life! Maps Available for Various Vehicle Modifications and Upgraades (Stage 0-4)
    • Completely Open Tune Editing With No Encryptions or Locks*
    • Use Any of Our Freely Available OTS Tunes to Create Your Own Custom ECU Tune.
    • Diagnostic Trouble Code Reading/Clearing
    • Enhanced Data-Logging and On-Board Data-Graphing
    • Save Multiple Tune Files On One Device (up to 6 including your original tune file)
    • 100% Reversible Back To Original OEM ECU Programming**
    • True Plug-and-Play Functionality***

That does not sound bad, right? Is it worth roughly $500 though? That is up to you to decide.

OFT never caught on in the N54 world so it will be interesting to see if Shiv Pathak and company can make inroads into the BMW tuning world again.

    Free Off-The-Shelf Tunes for Life
All our off-the-shelf (OTS) maps are developed and thoroughly tested by our experienced in-house ECU calibration team. These maps will safely provide substantial power gains and improved drivability. Available free of charge when requested from our online form.

    One Touch Programming
With pre-loaded tuned map files for your car, there is no need to ever connect the OFT to a laptop. You pick what map best suits your level of modifications and touch the screen! Of course, you can always take advantage of custom tuning through your laptop interface if you (or your tuner) wants to make customized mapping changes.***

    Hi-Res Touchscreen
With no buttons to fail or stick, the OFT is built to last. The large backlit screen can be adjusted for brightness and is easily viewed in direct sunlight. Real-time graphics and numerical data displays also provide a wealth of information literally at your fingertips.

    On-Board Data Logging
With 1 hour of available memory, high speed data logging files are stored internally in .CSV format. They can then be imported to your laptop via supplied USB cable and analyzed by our free datalog viewing software or viewed at www.DataZap.me, an interactive datalog viewing website.

$500? $#@! the cheapest canned-tuned option on the Audi B8/B8.5 S4/s5 platform is double that, and can be 3 or 4x that amount. This is a bargain! and so is the MHD, just be thankful on that part lol. This is awesome to say the least, and this is something that I wish our platform had.

So not only can you manipulate their OTS maps (a feature I really wish Bootmod3 allowed), but you can use it on as many cars as you want??? Damn...

My first couple of questions are, does it perform the ECU unlock over OBD2, and what are all of the asterisks?

I don't know but it certainly has some advantages on BM3 based on what is stated.

Being able to edit all the maps plus free updates for life is pretty cool.

Because Shiv is a tool and will abandon the platform quickly.

Probably only can use it on one car at a time. Otherwise buy a few and rent them out with a deposit for $100 bucks each time someone wants to flash w/ free shipping.

The OFT can only be used on one car at a time. But you can unmarry/marry it to an unlimited number of cars after that. Unmarrying involves flashing the car back to stock and erasing the OFT. At that point, it can be installed/married to another car. It doesn't have to be the same brand/model. Just as long as it is car that we support at the same price point (M3/4, GT86, MX5, Fiat, E90 N5x, etc.).

Out of the 25,000+ OFTs that we have sold in the last few years, around 30% of them have been installed in more than one car.

I'll be honest I have a very hard time believing that number.

At the same time, I'd love to see this on the 991.2 so get to work. You have the 991.1 don't you?

Also, that website needs some work.

I have seen a dyno day where a GT86 did a baseline with the stock tune and then a dyno after the OFT toon and it lost like 25 whp! lol

The Off the shelf toons are garbage which isn't surprising.

Say what you want about Shiv but he's a better tuner than anyone PTF or MHD have at their disposal especially Wedge.

That is a pretty $#@!in low bar haha.

Overall tuning knowledge for N54/5 and all BMWs basically is pretty terrible.

I'ts funny how things go. Some guy a forum who couldn't tune jack but practices on enough people's motors to figure things out suddenly is considered a good tuner. People on social media don't even remember.

Shiv has littered the streets with blown motors too but he at least has a real tuning background.

I don't know. We'll see what happens here. I'm more optimistic regarding the OFT than I have been because I see where it could really assist me in the 991.2 world.

The GT86 is a really interesting application; so I'm glad you've brought it up -- It's very unlike the the F Series ECU. Here's some insight: After the GT86 ECU is flashed, you must only START the engine and let it idle for 45 seconds before even touching the throttle. If you attempt to rev the engine or start a dyno pull (pretty much have any touch of the accel pedal) shortly before this time, VVT will be disabled and it will remain so until you let the ECU go to sleep, start the engine and let it idle for a period of time. The power loss when this happens is 20-30hp depending on state of modification. If you'd like more information, please message or email me directly so that I may point you in the right direction for more information about this effect. Even easier, a Google search should suffice if you are looking for additional data and info. Click here to enlarge

From the inferred tone (based on the writing/information of your post) I suppose you aren't a fan of our product, but that is OK. Do your best to remain a critical thinker in abstract use cases such as the situation you've exemplified. It's quite hard to lose 25hp through bad tuning; especially on a NA car that only makes 170whp stock originally. LOL. Just consider about what you are suggesting.

As far as Dinan goes, I wouldn’t expect too much from his original founded company since Steve Dinan has sold it (years ago). .... but rumor has it that Steve is up to something interesting. He’s a super clever guy and definitely has been around the block several times. I wouldn’t discount anything he does.

Also, that website needs some work.

There are over 100k GT86/BRZ/FRS on the road today, worldwide. A ton of MX5s too. Adding to those numbers are Fiat Abarths, 124 Spiders, Porsche 997/987, BMW N5x, and Ferrari 458s and you can get an idea of how large our total market is. That doesn’t even include motorcycle OFTs for Ducati, Aprilia and BMW. In most of those markets, the OFT is (exponentially) the most popular tuning option. It should come as no surprise that we have been lucky enough to sell a few OFT'S over the years. Curious to see how the F series BMW market treats us. If pre-sales are any indication, it should be fun. We recently purchased an F10 M5 and F80 M3 to facilitate development. So it’s safe to say we are pretty committed.

Wedge is a good guy and everyone has to start somewhere. What matters is not necessarily how long he has been tuning but how much care/effort he has put into his job over the years. I haven’t seen his calibrations. In fact, I didn’t even realize that he was custom tuning with MHD until yesterday. It’s good to see so many options available for the turbo M cars - makes for highly refined software and ROM reverse engineering efforts.

I'm referring to the new Dinan without Steve but Steve has a couple cool projects brewing.

I follow the aftermarket closely although admittedly not the GT86 stuff and have literally not seen anyone setting records with a Porsche, BMW N5X, or Ferrari 458 using the OFT or even posting impressive results. Just going by my experience not saying this isn't the case.

Literally nobody has posted about BMW N5X OFT stuff.

We'll see what happens. Like I said I'd like to see this on the 991.2 but we might be in flying cars by then.
