I've had an N55 for 5 years and I still have it. Two years ago I had my engine out to get replaced because of some bull$#@! valvetronic lockup or something that came out of nowhere. The engine was out and the shop was also working on an N54 motor swap as well. When the internals were compared the N54 was greatly more robust. I had pics compared everything but they're on my old phone.

So so no I am not guessing by my "opinion" but cold hard factual comparisons. There have been blown N55's. One thru a rod a couple months back. It's on N54Tech. Head may flow better and what not but that's not surprising. BMW had to make up for the weaker internals somewhere didn't they?

I am speaking for my E92. BMW clearly made the N55 stronger for M235/M2.

Funny to see that pop up. He was running it like that for 8 months or so then out of nowhere it started drinking oil. That was a tune related failure, shouldn't really be seen as finding the N55 limits.

Aso N55 has changed internals over time as well. So not all n55 are the same.

Very true. It was noticed the pistons were slightly different from what was pulled out and what the same part number bought at the same time as the rods. So there is a chance they just kept updating each year.

Either way if there are any problems, the E series N55 will prob be the first to see them.

Sticky, thank you to bring this topic here... I was surprised when i met daniel@PDU this weekend in ShiftS3ctor and he showed me the thread here... I will just copy the same this i've answered about the rod related problems in N55 there, and maybe you guys can accept it or not...

"As <another forum member> stated, both engines N20 and N55 have very similar constructions... N55 rods don't seems to be forged and the cars we are working aren't company cars that we can push the limits just to see how large is the hole the rod will do when crash... But just to be more clear, we had rod problems in N55 engines before, not in this car but in another upgraded turbo N55, so what i can say is, take care, the limit is very close... But only the time together with how popular the stage 3 will become will say... I will stick with my opinion to go forged internals over 600WHP...

So it's not a matter of "guess", it's a matter of "it already happened to me"... So i don't feel confortable to keep pushing it to prove some theory using other people pockets... If it was for bad luck, some weird internal problem, or god will? I'm not the one who is going to put this to the test... If anyone here want's to try this, it's just a matter of 13-15kUSD to build the same setup that generated this results and go for the streets to test, ready? Click here to enlarge

What are the specs on the car and what were the mods at the time of incident? I'd like to know what the car is and what let go.

I'm not doubting your expertise here but it seems the N55 varies considerably from generation to generation.

    F32 435i Electronic wastegate N55...
Have Stage 2 turbo, PI, E100, Flash...
Luckily we got the 6th cyl rod bent and detected that before further damages...
We are rebuilding it stock again and will keep an eye on that...
