Article: 2017 Porsche 911 R starts at $184,900 MSRP and weighs 3021 pounds - 991 units total, half for PCNA

After yesterday's leak we now have some concrete details on the upcoming limited edition the Porsche 911 R. First things first, this will be a very limited model. Approximately 991 units will be built and PCNA (Porsche Cars North America) is requesting half the total amount.

Whether they get half or not is yet to be determined. Porsche 918 Spyder owners are getting the first crack at securing an allocation. They definitely make certain customers feel like VIP's over at Porsche.

The model is a nod to the original 911 R and therefore has elements inspired from the original such as the gauge design. The original model also being a lightweight car has influenced the design of the 911 R.

The rear seats are deleted. The front fenders and lid are made out of carbon fiber to drop weight. They even make the roof out of magnesium. All of this effort results in a curb weight of 3021 pounds making the 911 R the lightest 911 on the market.

Combine the low curb weight with the 4.0 liter flat-6 with 500 horsepower out of the GT3 RS and you have a 911 purists dream car. Is it worth the $184,900 MSRP? You bet it is.

I specked my car out and it came out at 220K! It will be black with green stripes and green Porsche on the sides with black stripes. The side stripes can only be added for European delivery. I deleted everything as far as weight that I could to keep the car as track focused as possible. However, I did add A/C as the only creature comfort. The color options are;
White, Standard color
GT Silver, Standard color
Black, 7K upgrade
Yellow, 7K upgrade
Lava orange, 7K upgrade

You can choose either red or green stripes as additional options...

I don't understand the reasoning as to why the side stripes are European delivery only. I mean, that's fine, a trip to Europe is always fun, but why?

Porsche individual colors are not possible?

I don't understand either but that was all in the configuator at the dealership. I may try a special needs etc. Weird but am sure there is more to this and we will find out as time goes on..

I really want to see that lava orange in person. It seems like it just photographs poorly but would be a great color in person. It looks a lot different in every picture I see.

Preuninger also revealed that the 911 R’s new six-speed manual gearbox is likely to be offered in the second generation of the 991 GT3. “I can certainly imagine this gearbox in the GT3,” he said. “There is some overlap, with the 911 R for purists and the GT3 RS for track day fans, and then the GT3 in the middle. Right now it’s just with PDK, but I can certainly imagine gen-2 GT3 getting this manual transmission.”

Also same article with AutoExpress, the 718 GT4 will likely shun the new turbo-4 and continue with a normally aspirated engine.

No, the R gets all the RS goodies the normal GT3 doesn't get.

They will sell every R available and they will hold their value for years, as with every limited edition GT model.

They will sell every R available and they will hold their value for years, as with every limited edition GT model.

If I can't get a GT3 with a manual the R becomes less appealing in my eyes. I'm not one of the guys who can drop $200k and not think about it though.

It's a problem for sure. One guy said buy a 918 Spyder, pay it off by flipping all the cars Porsche gives you after that.

Hmm... maybe I'll write something on this. It happens in the world of wine all the time though. When I would get an allocation of some amazing wine for $100 a bottle or so I'd buy my whole allocation, sit on it a year, and flip it for $400 a bottle.

From reading that thread though its not even just previous Porsche customers, it seems like it is just the EXISTING halo customers who still own a 918.
It sounds like if they find out you have sold your 918 (or if they catch you flipping the limited edition GT cars for profit) they can/will revoke your VIP status and you gotta wait in line for an allocation like the rest.
At first it this struck me as being dumb and reminiscent of what Ferrari does but I think it makes a bit of sense from Porsche's perspective. They want the customers to who bought the $900k+ cars to keep them and not flip for profit and incentivize it by giving them first crack at limited GT cars.
People who are able to buy the $900k car are very valuable customers if you can keep them engaged/invested in the Porsche brand. Giving them access to the latest exclusive GT cars will keep them coming back to the dealership and increases the chances of repeat purchases of very high profit margin cars.
If this program didn't exist then anyone with lots of cash would be very tempted to just double their money on the 918 and sell it immediately which would attract a different type of person (who maybe isn't a car enthusiast, they just see an easy/quick return on investment) and means they lose contact with good high value customers (people with lots of disposable income and passionate about Porsche).

I agree with that. They aren't charging markup on used cars just so you have the privilege of buying a new car.

Someone mentioned service trips to the dealership they could figure it out. Although I am sure a lot of 918 owners have someone else take the car to the dealership for service. Definitely speculation.
