Advice with the 7 series - Maintenance and reliability
I am aware of the problems that come with owning a 7 series, but which year and model has the best reputation? I've heard 2006 was a good year but then those are harder to find. Is it impossible or extremely difficult to learn how to self-maintain a '97 740il?

I don't think its hard at all to maintain the '97 740 and you can do a lot of work yourself. The motor is reliable too.
It's the newer models with tons of electronics that make it more difficult to work on yourself.
97 and 2006 are vastly differently models.BRAND NEW IN BOX 991.2 standard/non-pse SPW cat bypass pipe for sale - $899 shipped

I have a 01 740 and I personally would not call it reliable...be sure to put aside at least 2k a year for un expected maintenance repairs and also have the number of a towing company near you as I have been left on the side of the road multiple times a year. Overall it is a fantastic car as long as you have the patience and pockets to support it.
