Underwhelming? 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro test - 0-60, curb weight, 1/4 mile, etc.

The new Toyota Tundra definitely got our attention as the specs on paper looked great. In practice? Not so much. The truck is clumsy, fat, and slow. It just does not live up to what we thought Toyota was giving us.

Going hybrid is all the rage but the Tundra does not seem to see a benefit. Perhaps that is due to the weight ballooning over 6000 pounds. 6107 pounds to be exact.

What about the 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque hybrid drivetrain that includes a twin turbo 3.5 liter V6? Well, it results in 0-60 of 5.7 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 14.5 @ 92 miles per hour.

In other words, slower than a Ford Ranger Ecoboost 2.3 four-cylinder with a JB4.

This is a truck so it is not about performance figures but you would expect more based on the specifications.

What else isn't up to par? The 4WD system is not full time. The air suspension is only offered in the rear. Handling is not exactly great either. Also, no generator from the hybrid system unlike Ford.

This truck is already behind competition such as the F-150 Powerboost.

Toyota will sell plenty but this is not the truck we thought we were getting.

Swing and a miss. Bummer as it looks good, the engine specs were awesome and you gotta love Toyota quality.
