The 986 Boxster is the original and first generation model. Every Porsche 986 Boxster including the base and S models use a watercooled M96 flat-6 motor. These are naturally aspirated motors that benefit from better breathing as Fabspeed's testing can attest to.

Let's take a look a the dyno from a 2002 Boxster S 3.2 liter:

You will notice the intake making an impact past 4000 rpm and especially in the upper rev range. At 4700 rpm it is picking up 10 wheel horsepower. By 7200 rpm, that number is 22 wheel horsepower compared to stock.

Because they're so cheap they are pretty popular for autocrossing/roadcourse work. Hard to find a more affordable and capable mid-engine platform for the money.
