Drag Race: BMW i8 vs. Porsche 992 Carrera vs. Volvo Polestar 1

The BMW i8 ends production soon and will not be missed at least not from a performance standpoint. This is the roadster version in the video that starts at $164,300 making it the most expensive car of the trio tested.

The 992 Carrera is the cheapest car in this drag race and it does not have any hybrid electric assistance. It is the lightest and has most of its weight over the rear wheels. The Porsche is simply efficient and that is why it easily wins the drag race.

Volvo's Polestar 1 is cheaper than the i8 although just barely at $155k. It is an interesting car with good looks and some actual muscle. That muscle is a 600 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque drivetrain. The 2.0 liter four-cylinder motor is supercharged and turbocharged sending power to the front wheels and helped by two electric motors that drive the rear wheels.

The Volvo is heavy and loses the drag race but eventually it will pass the Porsche:

It will have to run over 200 kph to do it but it does accelerate harder past 100 mph. Throw a tune on the Porsche or just go up to a Carrera S and the Volvo doesn't stand a chance. It's certainly a nice engineering exercise but that complex drivetrain is heavy at 5170 pounds.

For a coupe? Holy $#@!. That's what I would expect from a Rolls or Bentley, not a Volvo. That's over 200 lbs heavier than the new W12 Conti GT...

It kind of makes you wonder what the point is? They would probably be faster by dropping 1200 pounds and the electric drivetrain.
