    ESS (esstuning.com) BMW N62 650i/550i V8 Supercharger Sneak Peak - Coming Q1 2011

    The N62 V8 does not get a lot of love, there are not too many options out there for boosting power output. Well, ESS is developing a positive displacement supercharger kit for the N62. The supercharger chosen is the EVS 1900 from Eaton. This is a roots based supercharger. Why setup? We aren't sure to be honest. A roots setup is much more inefficient than a proper twin screw. It is also not as efficient as a centrifugal. The only centrifugal setup that was supposed to be available was from VF-Engineering but after a claimed $100k investment in the project it seems to have disappeared. Hey, beggars can't be choosers, and a positive displacement blower is going to be a lot of fun on the N62. This means it will be an options for the following vehicles:

    E60 545i
    E60 550i
    E63 645Ci
    E63 650i
    E65 745i
    E65 750i
    E53 X5 4.4i N62
    E53 X5 4.8is
    E70 X5 4.8i

    whats the difference between this and a "proper twin screw" ? I thought roots were twin screws

    Roots and twin screws are different. Both are positive displacement, however one compresses internally and the other externally.

    That's a simple one - Roots are cheaper to product and the OEM's like cheap and reliable. The complex curves of the male and female twinscrew rotors make it much more expensive to produce. But when a Cobra wants a hefty upgrade, they switch to a KB or Whipple twinscrew, usually bigger, but for the efficiency as well. Twinscrews actually are compressors where Roots (including the newest Eaton TVS) is only an air mover. That gives the twinscrew a leg up on the efficiency curve which translates to less heat at a given boost level.
    Notice cars like cobras switch from Eaton Roots to twin screws and make more power, even at the same boost?

    You do realize that this is the Eaton TVS blower that is used in the ZR1 and the CTS ? If not you should do some research before making such statements. The TVS is one of the most efficient blowers in the world and is the reason it was selected by Chevy for the ZR1. This design blows away any centrifugal blower design. This is a smart choice for this type of motor. Google the TVS and do some reading, you will see it is a very good blower design.     Once again you have showed how dangerous someone with an opinion and no knowledge can be on the internet. You are comparing twin screw to old Eaton product. This is a TVS blower a brand new product that you obviously have no knowlwdge of other than what you can dig up with a quick google search under eaton. here is something for you to read.

    And here is a direct comparison of a twin screw and a TVS blower with actual data ! something you have yet to post in your attempt to lump all eaton blowers together. Take notice of the the direct quotes including this one.

    Now if you have some actual technical data to post and not just your "opinion" please feel free to post it. The ZR1 runs less than 11 psi and im sure this supercharger kit shown here will not run anything near 16 psi. The techical data in this thread has been proven the advantage to TVS over twin screw under 16 psi. I will say it again there is a reason this blower is used in the ZR1.

    First of all, this is a TVS 1900, ok? The ZR-1 uses a 2300 but both are roots blowers and both are less efficient than a proper twin screw.

    Lump all blowers together? Do you have reading comprehension issues? I'm making a big difference between a roots and a twin screw here, try to keep up. The Eaton TVS blowers are a newer roots style but still less efficient. What that person posts in their opinion highlights a good point as once you start pushing the Eaton's, including the TVS blowers, they rapidly lose efficiency compared to a twin screw due to the heat built up.

    Also, because the twin-screw supercharger develops compression internally, it has a much better thermal efficiency of 70-80% compared to the 50-60% of the Roots supercharger. The improved thermal efficiency makes the twin-screw supercharger ideal for applications that require medium to high boost with good boost starting from low engine RPMs. However, the stronger construction is required to withstand internal compression, increasing the cost of manufacture.
    Now run along and do some reading, and realize that because an OEM uses something doesn't mean it is better, they choose it for cost and reliability. Unless you can explain why any time an eaton blower is bolted off and replaced by a twin screw even at the same boost the screw makes more power? Uh, it's because the twin screw is more efficient, backed up by data, thanks for playing.

    Sorry Sticky you are incorrect on TVS VS Twinscrew. Older Eaton Roots blowers are not TVS blowers. Different design and different performance. If you have technical data comparing TVS blowers VS twinscrew like I have posted please post it. Posting general info on Eaton blowers and calling them TVS is retarded as older eaton and the new TVS are two different products.

    I am not incorrect at all as they are both roots designs, new TVS or old Eaton, does not change it. I posted technical data, you for some reason decided to ignore it.
