Top Gear MKV Toyota Supra laptime matches a Porsche 997.1 GT3?

You may have seen headlines proclaiming the new Toyota Supra as a Porsche GT3 equivalent but hold on just a second. Top Gear tested the new Supra on their test track and the 1:23.1 time does indeed put it ahead of a 997.1 GT3 which did it in 1:23.2.

What these headlines fail to mention is all the cars ahead of the Supra for context. Also, that that GT3 laptime was not ever officially shown on the Top Gear show.

As for cars quicker than the Supra, how about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio which is much heavier? The Porsche 718 Cayman S. The BMW F80 M3. The Tesla Model 3. The Mercedes W205 C63 AMG S.

The Supra time is not bad but let's not start calling it a GT3 rival because it isn't:
