Ford builds what will be the largest gasoline motor for sale - New F-250/F-350 7.3 liter 'Godzilla' gasoline V8 engine

Why? Why not apparently. Ford has so many truck motors available you have to wonder what the point of this new engine is. It is the largest naturally aspirated gasoline V8 in its class and the largest motor for sale now that the Viper 8.4 liter V10 is no longer produced.

What is special about the motor? A cast-iron block. The crankshaft is forged.

It is a pushrod V8 with two valve cylinder heads. It certainly is not designed to be a revver.

The technology feels like step back but cam in block motors tends to be reliable and easy to maintain.

Ford says the motor will fit in the F-150 and Mustang although seeing it in a car is highly unlikely unless someone does a fun build.

Power and torque specs are not yet available but maybe tuners will have some fun using this engine as a base for projects.

Trucks are #1 selling.
Ford V10 gas engine has a 300,000+ mile service life.
More cubes, more torque.
With diesel costing about $1.00/gallon more than gasoline and in truck and towing do not get the increased mileage to make up the cost difference.
Diesel maintenance is way more expensive than gasoline maintenance.
Trucks don't count in CAFE requirements.
Marine application.
Industrial application. Pumps etc
Put a Whipple SC in the 'V' and watch the performance.

So here's the explanation:

If you used [the 7.3-liter] in an F-150 or something, it would not return the kind of fuel economy at light load as some of our other engine offerings that we deploy in that vehicle," Beltramo said. "There would be a hit for the displacement. But when you start talking about running day-in day-out, at high weights...the displacement brings a big fuel-economy benefit.

At low RPM if constantly towing the design pays dividends and is cheaper than their diesel motors. They essentially worked backwards into this design which requires the displacement to hit their goals.

It is also more compact and durable than their old V10.

The V10 in the F650/750 had a 5 year 250,000 mile power train warranty and a 500,000 mile service life.

I think they are referring to cam in blocks at low rpm in general along with cast-iron.

So this must be the v8 that was rumored to be an option for the raptor.
