Tesla Model 3 Performance Impressive Track Numbers VS Alfa Quadrifoglio

Motor Trend had Randy Pobst run one of the benchmark sports sedans (2019 Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio) against the new Tesla Model 3 Performance at Willow Springs with some impressive results.

Despite The Tesla:
1) Having 55HP less power.
2) Having smaller non carbon ceramic brakes.
3) Weighing 300lbs more
4) Running rear 235/35/20 Mich PS 4s vs the Alfa's 285/30/19 Zero Corsa AR Tires

The Tesla Achieved:
0-60 times of 3.3 secs vs 3.8 for the Alfa
Quarter Mile Time Of: 11.8 sec @ 114.2 vs 12.1 @ 116.2 for the Alfa
Braking 60-0mph: Tesla stopped shorter at 99Ft vs 101ft
Tied the Alfa's Figure eight time of 24.2 @ .83 g
Streets Of Willow Time: 83.90 sec vs 82.78 for the Alfa (1.12 sec)
Range on fill up: 310 miles vs 306 for the Alfa
Efficiency: Hwy/City: Testa is 4x-6x more energy efficient.
Interior Space: More head, leg and shoulder room. More cargo capacity than the Alfa.
Weight Distribution: Tesla Perfect 50%/50%, Alfa: 53%/47%
As Tested Price: Tesla: $78,700 Alfa: $88,895


Don't forget, the Quadrifoglio is one of the best bench mark sports sedans you can buy today. Yet the Tesla ran only about 1 second slower through the road course. The Tesla actually beat the PP1 Mustang GT's time. Importantly, the Alfa tore up its wide Zero Corsa tires, the Tesla barely scuffed its energy efficient narrow Michelin tires. They said with a simple programming update to push the tires harder (or wider tires), they would beat the Alfa's course time.

This is despite the disadvantage of a battery weighing over 600lbs to equal just 1 gallon of gas in energy content. If there is ever a battery break though...it will be a slaughter.

I know there are those that are so into the noise and engagement of a combustion engine. But in an electric car you get to enjoy the noise of the car next to you making all that commotion as you effortlessly pull away, or run close to them in quickness.You hear every ping, down shift, throttle change, etc. It is rather entertaining. Besides the jet-like whine of the electric motor is actually very addicting. But in real life, the throttle response of the EV is absolutely telepathic. And if you drive fast, you want a quiet car to fly under the radar. I have sped past patrol cars hiding in the side alley, who didn't even notice me. Now if I were in a fart can Honda, they would be all over me. In fact, sometimes when racing a big V8, after beating them, I quickly shut down because of all the attention getting loud exhaust noise from them. So yes, some people love to be "involved" with all the noise and commotion of a loud high revving gas car, and others love to "observe" it as they effortlessly beat that noisy car next to them. And yes, by the time you finally are going almost 130mph in the quarter mile, you can finally catch a 5000lb Tesla sedan in the quarter mile in that stock Turbo 911. But real life, in every day driving, the Tesla will take you every time from a non prepped intersection, or when it comes to instantaneous throttle response. On the Vbox, I am running high 10's without even chirping the narrow all season Michelin tires in the P100D and achieving 2.63 sec 0-60 times with ease. I'm quite certain the 1.9 sec 0-60, 8.8 sec quarter mile, 250 mph top speed roadster will be able to do fine on a track also.

Still that one lap performance problem. It starts cutting power gradually due to heat. Battery tech isn’t there yet. R&T was provided two Model 3 Perf for their track test. One lap of 1.5m Lime Rock used 9miles of battery life. They had used both cars battery charge while testing before the morning was up. Unless Telsa starts installing superchargers at all the local race tracks, the Model 3 is not yet viable for individuals who track their cars quite often. Battery heat, capacity, charge times...all still issues. Solid state battery will solve these issue, but we are still many years off from that.

On a side note, endurance racing is where BEV is going to have it's biggest challenge to overcome ICE, whether it be amateur or professional racing. I can't even begin to guess how far we are from a BEV car winning overall at 24hr Le Mans.

Yes it will take a battery breakthrough. But as I was saying, with how much of a handicap battery technology presents today, electric cars have evolved impressively. And the fact of the matter is most people don't track their cars. And most people would rather have a quicker 0-100mph time than a car that is quick 100-200mph but laggy and slow in everyday driving.

I dunno if it's quite as bad, but usually when I track my car I get around 7-9 mpg vs it's 30 rated MPG. I am not as aggressive of a driver as a magazine driver I bet.

With a little software tuning, improved pads and tires, the Model 3P lapped Streets of Willow decisively quicker than the Alfa and most others. It picked up over 2 seconds with these simple changes! So if you do not need a car for the 24hrs of LeMans (most of us don't?) this is awesome street performance.
