A new Gen VI Dodge Viper coming for 2021 but without V10 power?
Sorry, a Viper without a V10 is not a Viper. A Porsche 911 without an engine in the back is not a 911. There are certain iconic elements to sports cars that simply make those cars what they are. Just look at the debate over if the upcoming mid-engine Corvette is really a Corvette.
Who knows what will happen but Car and Driver is reporting a new Viper will hit the streets in 2021 without V10 power. Frankly, the news of a new Viper is great in of itself as many outlets reported the Gen V was the last Viper.
There is no official confirmation of anything reported but this is concerning:
Sorry, 10-pack fans, the Viper is downsizing. Chrysler is (finally) developing an aluminum-block V-8 to replace the aging iron-block anchor it calls Hemi. We’re guessing that a naturally aspirated V-8 will be the new Viper’s first engine. Taking a page from the Corvette team, Dodge SRT will likely offer the Viper in multiple performance levels. Think 550 horsepower to start and a supercharged 700-plus-hp variant (essentially a second-gen Hellcat engine) coming a year or two later. And if we know anything about the engineers at SRT, you’d better believe there will be a hard-core road racer in the works designed to challenge Porsche’s GT cars and Chevy’s upper-register Corvettes on the racetrack. A manual transmission will make it stand out against the increasingly automatic-only competition.
Maybe this is an overreaction as a world with a new Viper is better than a world without one but a high revving V10 with some major displacement sounds far more interesting than a new V8 shared with other FCA automobiles.
Give it a V10. Keep it a Viper. Keep it unique. It's not a hard recipe to follow.

Get Yamaha to do a super lightweight V10 like they did in the Lexus LFA and turbocharge it if you must but keep the V10. That engine can redline in 0.6 seconds. Yes it cost a fortune but they must be able to do something similar cheaper many years later. V10s are Iconic engines. Although a Viper to me is about a massive displacement V10.
