The 488 GTB is a joke - McLaren 720S vs. Ferrari 488 GTB on the dragstrip
No press ringers here. No Ferrari bull$#@! policies. Just two of the top mid-engine turbo V8 cars in the world lining up in enthusiast hands. We pretty much already know the 720S will win but the question remains, by how much?
Well, the 720S spins badly and the 488 GTB get a huge lead but wow does the 720S come on strong. It honestly is not even close:
How the hell is the 488 GTB supposed to match up with the 720S when it is trapping sixteen miles per hour less? 16 miles per hour! There is something seriously wrong with Italian horses.
The Ferrari improved to a best of 132.17 miles per hour with a 60-130 of 7.39 seconds:
The 488 GTB can not compete with a 720S. It can not compete with a 570S. Hell, it can't compete with an MP4-12C. This is why BoostAddict called out MotorTrend and Ferrari as both liars and cheaters.
The 720S went on to run 144 miles per hour... damn.

That last trap indicates that it has decent power but I'm sure that weighs a lot more than Ferrari quotes which is why it's tuned for low end torque.

No doubt it weighs more than Ferrari quotes. Probably around 3500+ pounds. McLaren gives you a real carbon tub and has since the MP4-12C. They actually give you your money's worth.
The difference between the two is so large Ferrari should be embarrassed. Especially for the cheating to try to convince people it isn't.BRAND NEW IN BOX 991.2 standard/non-pse SPW cat bypass pipe for sale - $899 shipped

I still don't get why it doesn't make more power....at 3500 pounds it should still be trapping way higher than that...that first trap is lower than any of the top tier German super sedans.
Like, what the hell...just turn up the boost, guys. Unless the engine is a grenade, which doesn't seem to be the case since I haven't heard of one recorded issue of one of these breaking yet, why do they have it tuned so conservatively? I'm sure it could easily make hundreds of hp more if they wanted it to.
Maybe they just truly were caught off guard. We do have to remember...the 720S is making more power than McLaren claims it does at the crank, at the wheels. Ferrari should have known better, probably, but still...they really blew the lid off with the 720S.
I'm assuming the 488 replacement will fix this.
Obviously the 488 press cars had a few extra horses...but I don't get why they don't just all come that way.

Might be. We know they have that in spades.
For what it's worth, around corners, I've heard the 488 is still more fun and lively, characterful than the 720. Whatever the case, Ferrari knows how to build a car that goes around corners and makes you feel like sex while doing it.
They both have their strengths and weaknesses, although dealing with the corporate arrogance at Ferrari would get old fast, I imagine. Not that I'm lucky enough to have that problem for now, at least.
