Track and drag race comparison between the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT and the Porsche 911 (991.2) Carrera 4 GTS
The AMG GT is aimed squarely at the Porsche 911. Now, as a front engine and rear wheel drive car it provides its own unique flavor in the sports car segment. The transaxle dual clutch gearbox gives it a rear weight bias although not nearly to the degree of the 911 and the M178 V8 obviously is very different from the Porsche 9A2 3.0 liter flat-6.
The AMG GT is heavier, more powerful, offers more torque, and is not AMG's imitation of a 911. It is AMG's own view of what a sports car can and should be.
The 991.2 GTS of course bridges the gap between the 991.2 Carrera and the 991.2 Turbo models. It weighs roughly 3300 pounds in rear wheel drive form (undercutting the GT by almost 400 pounds) and with 450 horsepower is no slouch. Autoweek in the video below tested the all wheel drive model which only has about a 200 pound advantage on the GT. It is too bad they did not utilize a rear wheel drive GTS.
The AMG GT has a distinct advantage with the motor. An extra liter of displacement is nothing to sneeze at and at 456 horsepower the M178 engine is detuned compared to the AMG GT S. Yet, it is the same motor with the same turbochargers. With a tune, it easily outpaces what the 911 GTS will be capable of and cracks 600 wheel horsepower. The AMG wins the brute force argument.
In the drag race between the two the 911 GTS gets the lead by virtue of all wheel drive traction but the AMG GT makes up the ground and passes. That is impressive. From a roll, the AMG GT will easily be the faster car. How would a lighter rear wheel drive 911 GTS do though?
Now, AutoExpress titles the video stating there is a track comparison. Well, drifting the AMG GT on a track is not comparing the roadcourse capability of the cars. The title is misleading. Where are the laptimes? Where is the actual battle?
Ultimately, the 911 is chosen as the better overall car. It is more involving and simply more fun to drive. In the USA though, the AMG GT is cheaper at $111k than the 911 GTS 4 $126k so the value argument actually works in favor of the AMG especially when you factor in how much power AMG left on the table.
The truth of the matter is, both are amazing cars and there is no wrong choice.
