BMW F80 M3 Competition Package (ZCP) vs. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio vs. Mercedes-AMG W205 C63 S 1/4 mile drag race and roll race

Finally, a real world straightline comparison of these three cars going at it at the same time. Awesome right? Well, not exactly. Unfortunately Carwow who put this together does not really understand how to properly do this.

Many automotive journalists do not so we are not singling them out but right off the bat there is a massive flaw. It is called traction dependent results. What this means is the result will be different based on who gets the best launch.

The Alfa Romeo gets the best launch and wins the drag race with an 11.9 second pass. The F80 M3 trails it at 12.3 seconds with the Mercedes-AMG C63 S bringing up the rear at 12.6 seconds.

Where are the trap speeds? Why were they not recorded? We would easily be able to tell which car is the fastest and which is simply traction limited with that data. Why is this constantly omitted by so many so-called journalists in so many so-called tests? What is so hard to understand?

Consider for a moment if the C63 S is outfitted with drag rubber. Does it suddenly become the fastest car there? The same goes for the M3. With proper rubber is it suddenly the fastest car? All this drag race shows the viewer is that the Alfa got the best launch which can vary greatly on street rubber and based on driver input.

If Carwow is not interested in properly displaying what the cars are capable of in the 1/4 mile then they should include trap speed data or run them from a roll where the traction variable is mitigated. That way this would actually be a useful comparison.

Fortunately, they do run them from a roll so this is not a total disaster. The Alfa Romeo pulls all three cars although the Mercedes-AMG looks to get a poor start. It certainly lends credence to the Alfa Romeo's tested 119.8 1/4 mile trap speed.

Overall, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a very strong entry in the segment and that is a wonderful thing.

Wow that's got to be the most horrible looking c63s coupe I've ever seen. Looks all wrong in that horrid colour. Also I thought the coupe was supposed to be quicker than the saloon ? The saloon can live with these two other cars yet the coupe gets raped by these other two cars. So glad I didn't get one now. Even in a roll. Absolute fail for me. Even the GLC63 coupe will probably be quicker. I'd be not to happy if I'd bought one. E63S on order but always loved the c63.

Over a drag race video? I mean, you can get a tune and get a lot more power out of it if you want.

The platform is just way too heavy IMO but that is why the AMG GT exists.

It sure would piss me off to be honest. The c63, for me at least, was always inherently flawed. It could not compete around the track was heavy etc but it did have the saving grace of grunt. If it hasn't even got that in a drag race and roll compared to its rivals what has it got. This sector is mainly about that in my opinion. I have no issue with it being slower around a track blah blah but it has to have that power it always had when comparing to its rivals. I have an E63s on order and if the new M5 or RS6 etc can murder it around the track Im not to bothered but I'll be well peeved if cars in its sector murder it in a roll or drag. I've always loved the C63 and find present model a disappointment. I wish it hadn't been as I'd rather have a c63s coupe with 4 matic than having to go to the E. That might sound mad to some but its the truth. Also the SUV's are also getting 4-MATIC so why not the c63 ?. Whats the point of having power if you cant put it down. It's useless and pointless. All this is my opinion and opinions vary.

The C63 doesn't get the 4Matic IMO because it would just be a mini-E63. It would be heavier and not offer anything all that different except a slightly cheaper price.

The C63 is supposed to be more nimble but as you can see it is still heavy and not even the best straightline option in the class.

That said, the M177 will make a ton of power and it is a better motor than the S55 of the 2.9 V6 of the Giulia.

Yes I think you are right. I'm all in on a E63s now so doesn't matter but would have loved to have seen a C63 black series coupe with 4 wheel drive less weight and that same engine. I for one would have paid E63 money or more for that. I don't think the S class or E ( theres no e63s coupe ) would have been effected as they are just ultimate luxury machines. Those drivers don't really care. Two guys I know who own them are older chaps who like the power but that's not the defining factor for owning them for those guys. Also, BMW has these halo 3 series cars ( GTS , Competition Pack, CS etc list goes up every week) so why cant Merc give us one. I wonder if you could take the 4-Matic out of the C43 and put it in the C63s coupe. Wonder if RENNTECH do that or are thinking of that. That would be a dream for me. Something like the MANHART cr700 but with 4 matic as well. Enjoy the site its great by the way.
