    Hows this for an IC

Hows this for an IC, biggest tube and fin that can be crammed into a 1 Series period

and some results from the third back to back run at 400rwk on dyno dynamics dyno and the dyno room tipping the temp at 100f

And it only weighs 13 lbs

Maybe I'm crazy but didn't we see this IC on another car? Or is this a new giant entry?

Same size but not the same, this is a newer US designed tube and fin core and a very different mounting system that doesn't rely on the factory plastics to support it and it has a relocated factory power steering cooler with twice the cooling capacity for those skid pan/drift days

Would you mind posting a link to where/how this FMIC can be procured?

Seems light for such a large intercooler.

It's tube and fin and usually half the weight and double the price of bar and plate

Ok, so what I understand is this is a guy in Sydney, Australia making these. Username is @JD75:

    FYI,

this thing kicks arse even on the dyno with regards IAT suppression, with a 400rwkW car the biggest increase we saw from the start of the run to the end was a rise of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. After 5 consecutive back to back runs all at 400rwkW the IAT rise was only 30f in total. On the road with cooler air being forced through the core at speed I'm certain the results will be even better.

The same car we did the dyno testing on will be entering another roll racing event soon where he was previously seeing IAT's rise considerably during a 3rd to 4th gear pull on a mild 20 degrees Celsius night with the use of a Wagner Evo 2 Competition cooler.

Stay tuned for further testing with on-road results to come...

Not a fan of the end tanks to be very honest. If they don't have inner guides to aid routing the air up I'd doubt half of that intercooler is seeing any flow.

I won't be surprised if this fmic isn't significantly more expensive than even the ADE offering.

I love a big FMIC and all, but it hits a point where bigger doesn't mean better...

Would like to see it compare to the vrsf 7.5 or an ADE rather than the Wagner.

Would love to compare but the shear weight of those things scares me, fitting the vrsf ic for example to the factory plastic mounting position would worry me as it was never designed to carry that kind of weight.

Even with this solution and weighing less than half the big alternatives it wasn't left up to the factory mounting points to carry the weight and a whole new mounting system was developed.

I can only compare it to what I have

And yes the cost increase is substantial over bar and plate but the weight is halved with tube and fin, there will always be a trade off

Plus I'm comparing the best tube and fin available up until now to the new.

Is methanol unable to be sourced locally or just not wanting to run it?

Dont wan to run methanol, can cause blown manifolds and corrosive to alloy.

Most likely it wont happen but when you factor in all the bits and tuning and then ongoing maintenance and refilling its cheaper to get a big mother IC

Sorry buddy. A stable or even slight decrease in temp wouldn't prove 100% usage of the whole intercooler.

I run meth and I see temp drops thanks to the latent heat evaporative effect. I can't recall if I see a temp drop on IC alone. The 7" vrsf IC.

Well how about we compare apples to apples turn your meth off and do 4 runs back to back to test the efficiency of the 7" vrsf core

Who really cares if the whole core doesn't get flow as long as the temps are lower

Here is the wagner evo comp 2 doing its thing and a dyno chart showing the power drop with every run because of the heat generated

Will do another when the new core is fitted, this is on straight pump fuel, no meth, no e85

Had to shut down the third run as the temp got to high for me

    Good work and very informative.

Looking for low IATs for consistent, repeatable power.

Keen to see you drop your new IC into your car for some comparison.

Pretty much everyone who cares about efficiency. If the entire core isn't contributing, then the core can be smaller, which means the weight and cost can also be lower. If the size can be smaller, it can cover less of the radiator which will help with radiator efficiency. These are all desirable things that you apparently think no one wants or cares about for some reason.

Really, so a smaller core that gets full flow of fresh air with higher iat's is better than a bigger core with less flow but get lower iats
hmm you keep your smaller core, I'll go with the bigger one

have you seen the flow through this core or tested it ?

proof is and will be posted

So where are your dyno results to back up your statement that yours is better ?

I'm bot saying it's not but post the proof with at least 3 back to back runs on the same log with no meth
