JB4 tuned BMW F80 M3 gets smoked on the strip by an APR Stage III+ tuned MKVII Golf R

2.0 liter turbo I4 vs. 3.0 liter twin turbo I6 and the four-cylinder comes out on top? Yep. To be fair, the MKVII Golf R has a turbo upgrade courtesy of APR and their Stage III+ kit while the BMW S55 3.0 liter I6 is on the factory turbos but the Golf also has an engine 2/3 the size.

The F80 M3 is tuned with a BMW JB4 piggyback but what supporting mods it has or what map it is running is unknown.

This is the Golf R mod list:

APR Stage 3+ Kit APR ECU + TCU Tune
    APR Intake
    APR Intercooler
    Milltek Valved Catback System
    USP Cool Flow Filter Housing
USP Cool Flow DSG Filter Housing
USP High Flow Turbo Inlet Hose
    Spulen Catch Can
    KW V3 Coilovers
    Vossen VFS1
    P3 VIDI Gauge

The all wheel drive dual clutch Golf R getting the better elapsed time here is no surprise. However, it also traps higher than the M3 as well. Certainly impressive performance by the Golf.

I really don't think that engine displacement has any place in power arguments anymore.

Both cars could have had better 60fts, 1.96 for M3 and 1.81 for GolfR.

Drag radials will guarantee 10's for the GolfR.

something interesting about this track (Bradenton Motorsports)...

I've always trapped higher in the right lane (Golf R), but always get my best E.T.'s on the left lane (M3). Each and every time. The left lane favors better 60ft times (hence slightly lower E.T.'s), and I believe the D/A on the day of the video (looks to be FIXXFEST) is 1,600-1,800ft.

Even though turbos are everywhere displacement still matters.

From what I could tell, it looks like the M3 may have been sleeping a little at the light. The MPH between the two are pretty close.

Well sure the peak power may be the same but what about the area under the torque curve?

The Golf R is still a piece of $#@! VAG product...and I own an Audi. So, that's saying something.

Why is it so bad exactly?

I'm pretty happy with my S3 so far, but I have seen some VII R's with turbo issues through the forums. I just can't wait for the IROZ motorsport kit to come out. They do crazy things with the 5-cylinder, and so far development for MQB platform looks promising.

Iroz does sick stuff on the 2.5 TFSI but I don't know if that necessarily means they will have the same results with the four-cylinder.

However, if it's anything even close it will be epic.

Thought I showed you their progress?! They've built the 2.0 and are about to release their turbo kit. The transmission is the next limiting factor.
They just ran a 10.8 @ 129 on a stock-block flat torque curve tune. They're expecting low 10s and 135-ish traps with their IMS650 kit that'll be released soon. That'll be rods & pistons though. Vid below is with v-box, claming 10.6...

    Maybe I forgot. Not bad!

10.9 though is pretty much what APR and TTE are doing with fairly mild upgrades.

Looks like they will have more power though as 136 is moving.
