E92 335i with upgraded N54 turbos vs. Porsche 991 GT3 RS roll on race

The 991 GT3 RS running from a roll is something we have all seen before. It's certainly a stout car but it is built for the track. The aerodynamics slow it down due to increased drag but the low curb weight (roughly 400 pounds less than the E92 335i), rear wheel drive layout, and high revving 4.0 liter flat-6 make for an efficient package.

The GT3 RS is slower than a rear wheel drive Huracan from a roll. It did beat a tuned SL600 from a dig which is something an N54 on upgraded stock housings is capable of as well.

What about this particular 335i in the video? It gets pulled right off the line as if it was in the wrong gear or has the stock housing turbo upgrade with the worst lag in the world.

It does finally come back strong up top but with all the torque down low the N54 has with a turbo upgrade the driver didn't seem to have it where he should have on the tach at the start of the race considering the terrible start.

Good thing I will probably never be able to buy a Porsche like that. I'd be getting on it just to hear the nice noises it makes!

Well it's not the age that matters here as much as it does a naturally aspirated six cylinder engine versus a turbocharged six cylinder engine.

Come on sticky you can't compare a hand built certifiable race motor vs. a mas produced plebeian commuter car engine...even if they are both 6cyl. Jk

Interesting factoid is that bmw was actually ahead of Porsche in the 6cyl NA engine department...when they were heavily invested in natural power.
    2003 BMW M3 CSL was 3.25l with 360hp (110.8 hp/liter)
    2004 Porsche GT3RS was 3.6l with 381hp (105.8 hp/liter)

who knows what would have happened if BMW stayed NA on some of its cars, we could have had an M3 with 4.0 inline 6cyl with 500hp....

I personally really respect Porsche because they kick ass at turbocharging and they still kick ass in the natural aspirated engines. That shows true dominance and technical skill to keep both at the top.

I'm quite aware of this and the E46 M3 CSL was when M as a whole peaked.

It's a shame we don't see the M division offering atleast one naturally aspirated platform, just to show the world they still got it.

    Nope.

The only real thing on the horizon is the next M5 which with DCT and all wheel drive will be a Bavarian GTR.

BMW builds some of the best NA engines of any car manufacturer. Mclaren can confirm that. It's sad they haven't put the same R&D into the turbo motor era. Seems like they're really cutting costs with them.

The addition of AWD will surely help the M5, it's not like it's a world class handler anyway. May as well have a bad ass drag platform

It will help put down the torque, sure.

So what are we going to have? 3 german mid-size sport sedans all with the same style 4.0-4.4 liter V8 and all with all wheel drive? How exciting...

Palm Turbos Stage 1? Never heard of this name. I suspect it's an overseas name but stage 1 isn't all that impressive with the offerings here in the US so you can probably expect the same from this pair as well. Either way, the GT3 is badass and whooped on it with that gnarly downshift.

EDIT: Just watched the rematch. Results were drastically different. Thoroughly entertained.
