First track day of the season. blown rear turbo :(

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to share my experience over the past weekend. Got new oem turbos and hpfp replaced from a local BMW dealer last than 2 months ago. Babied those turbos for about 500 miles then started tuning. I am FBO with Inlets running E60 custom map by wedgeperformance. Dialed the car in completely with Ken couple days before going to the track. Car felt like a monster the night before and logs seemed good. And Ken did a great job tuning and is not at fault (if that was what you are thinking) in my opinion.

Went to the track next morning, and ran a 12 flat at 115. 1.7 60ft . Kept running 12s consistently which was annoying. Did 3 passes and called it a day. On my way home on cruise control, I got off the highway and and slowed to a stop just like normal. As soon as I let off the gas and started to accelerate, I heard a pop like my coupler came off and pulled over. Looked under the hood and everything seemed fine and then I started hearing a loud whining sound. Upon further inspection, looks like rear turbo was blown. Front turbo looks brand new and Inlets didn't pop off ( I was hoping that was the issue ).

Just wanted to see if anyone has any idea on how the rear turbo blew up and the front didn't?
    Any suggestions?

May be time to upgrade, or just get a stock turbo and stop pushing the car. Super bummed out....Click here to enlarge

Maybe poor quality turbo or a manufacturing issue. When you're pushing factory turbos to nearly 90% duty cycle at the track and revving the motor out you're giving them quite a bit of a beating. Some will take it, some won't. IMO the little bit of top end you get running the turbos so hard over 6k rpm isn't worth it, shift earlier and you'll have more power and kill fewer turbos.

The replacement turbos BMW is putting on cars under their warranty are junk. They are not the same quality as the OEMs. Same thing happened to me as well as a close friend of mine. Both fell apart in under 5k miles.

Am I reading your logs wrong, cause I'm seeing over 26 psi in boost?

When pushing them high like, it's best to keep the revs lower (shift around or before 6k).

Sounds like combination of kill tune on stock turbos and a poor quality remanufactured OEM turbo.
Sucks, have you talked to the dealer yet?

Agreed, the replacement turbos being used are junk, I would not surprised if the turbo that has failed you was just bunk.

If it were me I would use this as a time to upgrade to somthing better than what is being used.

Best of luck with your ordeal

Revving a stock turbo N54 to 6900 RPM!!? Likely the cause of your 12 second passes and also your blown turbos... Maybe don't run 27 PSI of boost on stock turbos, scary.

I have refurb'ed turbos from BMW (25k miles) and run them at ~20 PSI DD and also track the car monthly @ 17psi on a road coarse which is much harder on components, no issues so far.
