BMW prices the 2016 F87 M2 at $51,700 MSRP making it the best value in the M lineup
How does $51,700 for the upcoming 2016 F87 M2 sound? What do you get for that money? A 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-6 with output of 365 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque which no doubt is underrated. That money also buys the lightest M car in the lineup short of the M4 GTS which is more than twice the price but we want to see independent weight tests for both.
You also get a car for the money capable of lapping the Nurburgring in under 8 minutes. With some aftermarket suspension tweaks and maybe the addition of a water injection system one can expect the M2 to be a potent track car.
The engine itself is a closed deck block based on the N55. BMW did not make the same mistake with the M2 as they did with the 1M where they just used an engine they had laying around only changing the software. The M2 gets a real M motor despite not it not having an M designation as odd as that is.
The 2016 X4 M40i will share the same engine and hit the streets next month which is before the M2's expected April debut.
Say hello to the best performance value in the M lineup.

I like the car but I don't really buy that its a "real M motor". Isn't it just a B58 with rods and pistons from the S55? Is the head any different than a normal B58?
Not trying to hate but I think if it was a real M motor they would give it an S code.

Interesting, we already have a turbo from a B58 heading our way for some R&D thanks to some connected friends, hoping the M2 uses the same turbo.

Yeah, someone had leaked the build sheet on an M2 and it had the motor designated as an N55. This is interesting information for sure. I assume it's not getting an S designation because it's going to be used in non-M cars also.

That is odd because if it is an N55 I would doubt it would be closed deck because why redesign the N55 to close the deck instead of just use the B58 block?
If it is just an N55 with forged pistons, rods, and crank then it really won't be any more "M" than the 1M was. A cool car and I would totally get one but a parts bin car nonetheless. I hope I am proven wrong.

All BMW did was take the s55 and swap turbos/intercooler. N55/S55/N54 share the same the same bore and stroke.

So you think the block, rotating assembly, AND head is exactly the same as the S55? Then why not call it an S55?
Maybe it is an S55 lower end (block and internals) with an N55 head. That would probable make the most sense with the official info we know. Would explain the closed deck, lower redline, and the N55 engine code.

Um no it's not a B58 and I have no idea where this is coming from as it's been detailed many times already it has the same bore and stroke as an N55/N54/S55 and a closed deck block: http://www.bimmerboost.com/content.p...ds-curb-weight

I realize my mistake in the earlier posts, forget I mentioned the B58. I forgot it had a smaller bore and longer stroke.
But do you agree with my final comment then?
"Maybe it is an S55 lower end (block and internals) with an N55 head. That would probably make the most sense with the official info we know. Would explain the closed deck, lower redline, and the N55 engine code."
I'm just confused because if the block, rotating assembly, and head are all exactly the same as the S55 why wouldn't they call it an S55 of some sort? Giving it an N55 engine code implies there is something significant re-used from the N55 and since its not the internals/rotating assembly and since they said the block is closed deck then it must be the top end.
I am not complaining or bitching or talking $#@! about it I just am curious. I assume the S55 head flows a lot better than the N55 so maybe they reused it to keep the S55/M3/4 on top as you said.

I'm confused as well as to why it doesn't have an 'S' designation as it clearly should. I do not know. I've thought about writing an article on this topic but I was waiting to see if maybe someone at BMW lost their job over this first as it makes no sense.
It could be that rather than using the S55 block with an N55 head they used the S55 head which in theory would make it cheaper to assemble. If so, the valvetrain is good or more revs in stock form.
I don't know. Nobody has a full breakdown and BMW is not going to help the aftermarket out by telling us.

Herp Derp! I just hope its as fun as the 1M is. I'm getting a launch car so had no choice on how it was configured so it will be a fully loaded AW M2. Haven't driven a DCT but I know it will be faster, hoping it will be as engaging...don't want to get bored!
I also hope to find out that the M2 is using a larger turbo than what is in the standard N55. I think it might because it really doesn't make sense to overhaul the engine like they did but not upgrade the turbo. We will see.#Chuckstrong
