G4 dyno runs, logs, and videos
Hey guys,
We sort of lost two weeks with the project resolving a power supply/relay issue but with that comfortably behind us we are finally back on track and back to tuning. There are literally hundreds of lines of new code and many new algorithms so still much testing and tweaking to do. But very happy with the progress so far.
Here are are a few dyno runs and logs and a video from a tuning session yesterday. Mods are downpipes, IC, and DCI. Still the stock catback/cats and heavy OEM rims. Octane around 92 (had 10 miles showing on a previous 100 octane tank and filled to the brim with 91) and dyno conditions were ideal with temps in the 60s.
Some general notes in no particular order:
1) Autotuning is disabled right now as we're focused on the new boost control system.
2) The new boost control system is working well and is 10x better than the G3 system but there are still a few tweaks that need to be made. Also with its adaptive component we're working to prevent it from needing to reset each time a map switch happens. I think we'll get there with the next update.
3) The current bypass map is really a bypass + 1psi map for some reason. Will fix that.
4) Very happy with the new air/fuel curves which have allowed more timing and power for a given boost level. Safer too.
5) You'll note the JB3 logs now include ignition advance and throttle position. Also available but not shown as they are not scaled yet are EGT, air/fuel, DME duty cycle, DME boost target, etc. Logs are sampled at 10hz currently which is the maximum you can reliably pull data from the DME CAN interface. For those wondering other systems that claim higher sample points are just sending repeated rows with the same CAN data such as timing advance, etc, repeated. They are also sampling at 10hz.
6) The pink line on the log called target represents the actual boost target. Each map has its own curve and there is a user adjustable map where you can enter your desired boost target in 500rpm increments. And no longer will you have to worry about boost dropping during cold weather. Also there is an autotuning system that will adjust each curve +- 5psi based on CAN feedback. The average user will just likely just pick map 1 with autotuning on and let it take care of everything for them.
7) The 13psi run represents where autotuning is likely to tune someone mostly stockish while the 15psi run represents where someone running full bolt ons and 93 is likely to wind up.
Also included is a video of our steering wheel controls just to give you a flavor for how that system works. And a video I shot during the dyno tuning.

Hey Terry, looking good. Just curious, the ignition advance drop off at about 4500 RPM, is that due to VANOS?

It's present in almost every log for almost every tune, and on stock logs as well. Unless you run race gas in which case it smooths out. Honestly it's bit of an enigma but my suspicion is BMW tuned the ECU extra sensitive for feedback during that changeover range.

CA is a great place to live but going down hill IMHO. And the tracks here suck.

On the G4 we have a spare PWM pair that could be used for that, but we're planning on using the output to communicate with the meth controller for a closed loop meth system. G4 dictates how much flow there should be, reads flow sensor to verify its there, and handles how high to turn the wick.

cant wait for this! Terry, is there going to be a way to do all basic functions without using a computer? I know it sounds like everyone should hook up straight to a computer, but the whole engine bay thing is just a hassle i dont want to deal with (i like to install it and forget about it). Is there a way to enable, for example, DP Fix, boost levels/settings without using the computer, or straight from the OBD port (including 2007 MY!)
