N55 owners who want open OBD flashing get in here!!

With all of the awesome progress lately on the N54 tuning/flashing side of things I have gotten extremely jealous Click here to enlarge. As most of us know the cobb flashing capabilities are in the stone age in comparison to even the cobb support for N54 (no vanos tables defined even, etc etc). Not to mention how handicapped we are compared to the new stuff that is being added to the N54 xdf's. Cobb has pretty clearly abandoned the BMW flashing game and are just riding on their good reputation now. @jyamona suggested putting a list together of people interested in furthering the N55 tuning so someone like @martial@mhd might be interested in adding N55 support to the MHD app (or anyone else with the necessary know how and skills). I would certainly ditch my Cobb and pay for an app or whatever if I could edit and define my own tables and flash the DME over OBD and not be stuck with what cobb decided was "good enough".

Chime in here if you are in the same boat and are interested in seeing this progress. Obviously the E9x N55's will be easiest (as cobb already proved they are flashable) but there are certainly a lot more F3x N55 cars out there so the ability to flash those cars at all would increase demand significantly.

    Thanks guys!

I am all for it and wouldn't hesitate to ditch my COBB if something like this were to happen.

    COUNT ME IN!

    +1 on the jealousy part.

If you can find other people that are in our same boat refer them to this thread or maybe make a similar post on the other forums (I don't really go on the other ones much at all) that would be super helpful. I know there are quite a few people who would be into this but a lot of them probably don't know what they are missing.

I'm going to copy paste your post to N54tech and the other forums and also link this thread.

I thought the Fxx cars were basically impossible to OBD flash without hacking up the DME first?

I'd be interested. I'm pretty disappointed in the abandonment by Cobb regarding new features.

Well you don't really have to hack it up, just bench flash them. Meaning you take the DME out of the car and then solder a pin somewhere and hook it up to this little rig (called infineon tri-core boot loader or something like that) to get to the EEPROM storage while the DME is in boot mode.
After you do that I think I have read of some euro tuners that are able to OBD flash from then on but not 100% sure how they do that.
I am definitely not an expert though. I wouldn't totally give up on the F3x cars being flashed though which is why I would invite any of them to speak up too. Maybe with enough interest someone smarter than me will decide to figure it out.

Actually they don't solder anything. They read out the DME key by connecting to 3 pins on the DME. Then use this key to flash the DME in bootmode. To allow flashing via OBD they need to do a final change via bootmode bench flash, then flashing via OBD becomes possible. During the OBD flash (they only have access to a specific part of DME memory) the nav screen goes black and reboots a few times (I guess they reset canbus during this process). This OBD flash doesnt take longer than a few minutes either. I guess they only write the different part to DME. Mine had speed limiter removed and lowered ign adv curve due to bigger turbo. August 11th I go back to up the load. I previously had missfires as well due to the tuner setting AFR too rich and I noticed HPFP drops in JB4 logs. Once we put AFR back to stock values all was ok again.

ABout the soldering I heard some tuners do this to allow some cables outside the DME so they don't have to remove it everytime to bench flash it. They just connect to those 3 cables hanging out of the DME and do a bench flash while the DME still sits in the car Click here to enlarge Not sure how water proof this solution is though.

Great info. I never read it that clearly spelled out. I see the bootloader tool on eBay for like $100 but I heard it is a knockoff and won't work properly. The real tool is $$$$.
Even just the speed limiter removal would be awesome. Cobb doesn't even remove the speed limiter so mine is at $#@!ing 135mph... I hit it all the time.

Im in for this without a doubt. Having a flashable (via cobb) n55 the lack of table access is still frustrating. Surely someone will see the potential customer base and get to the bottom of this
