Porsche still testing a four-cylinder 911, possible four-cylinder turbo for the 991.2 facelift?

This is nothing new. Almost a year ago Porsche was spotted testing a four-cylinder engine in a 991 body. Why is Porsche still testing this motor in a 911? Well, the new boxer four-cylinder family Porsche is developing is expected to go into the 981 chassis which means it will be available for the Cayman and Boxster.

The fact they continue to use a 991 test mule certainly makes one wonder if the 911 will get a four-cylinder as well. The 911 is expected to continue with a flat six (although smaller and turbocharged) so this is likely just a matter of convenience.

How do we know it is a four-cylinder? Well, compare the engine noise in the four-cylinder mule and the six-cylinder mules below. Either way a new four-cylinder boxer engine family should debut from Porsche soon.

God I hope not. It's bad enough the mid-engine cars have to get 4 cylinders.

Yeah but they sound like $#@!. And its just not right. Even a turbo F6 sounds 100x better.

Nothing you can do about it. Smaller motors and turbo four-cylinders are inevitable for Porsche.

Unfortunately seems to be true. Looks like the GT cars will be the only 911s/Caymans/Boxsters worth having in the future.

I'd like to add though that the 911 does a four-cylinder history.

This is very true. Porsche built themselves on 4 cylinders. And we all know about the (horrid) 912. But the sound...the sound kills me. They seem to have tuned it to sound like an anemic vacuum cleaner. Surely they can do better.

They should throw some unequal length headers on there and make it sound like the subie rumble lol.
I think the 911 should stay flat 6 but I am actually really excited for the Cayman turbo flat 4.
If the 911 turbo modding potential is any indication, I bet a tuned turbo 4 cayman with upgraded turbo/s will be crazy fun.
