Honda is bringing the S2000 back as a mid-engine hybrid sports car with a curb weight under 3000 pounds
We all remember the Honda S2000 fondly. An affordable, lightweight, fun to drive roadster with a motor that screamed to an incredible 9000 rpm redline in its first iteration. Since the S2000 ended production Honda has not had anything nearly as exciting to drive in its lineup but it looks like there finally may be a worthy successor that will inject sportiness back into the Honda lineup.
Reports are the S2000 is coming back but not as a front engine naturally aspirated roadster. It will instead be a mid-engine sports car. It is not going to be a true successor to the original S2000 format in anything other than the name.
That is not necessarily a bad thing as we can think of the new S2000 as a mini-NSX. The main difference being that the S2000 will not be all wheel drive but rear wheel drive with the electric motor fitted in the back. This will be mated to a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor borrowed from the Civic Type-R.
Honda purists and S2000 fanboys may not be too happy about the change but frankly with how boring the Honda lineup is we'll take it. A mid-engine rear wheel drive turbocharged hybrid certainly sounds like it will be fun to drive with the rumored 364 horsepower.
If they manage to hit their weight target of keeping the car under 3000 pounds it will be a hit offering excellent performance. The question really comes down to what it will cost? Reports state something in the $60k range which certainly is pushing it for a Honda but not for a mid-engine sports car.
We will know more as we get closer to the 2017 launch date.

I hear you. Just doesn't 'feel' like an S2000. If it's what is being reported though it should be a hell of a car.
