2015 Porsche 981 Cayman GT4 spotted testing with 3.8 liter twin turbo flat-6 power?

If this is true the Cayman just elevated itself well above the 911 Carrera and Carrera S. It is just hard to believe that Porsche would take the motor from the 991 Turbo, detune it slightly, and stick it in the Cayman. CAR reports that is exactly what Porsche is doing though as the upcoming hardcore GT4 Cayman model is stated to have a 3.8 liter twin turbo flat-6 with power somewhere around the 450 horse mark.

That would annihilate the 911 Carrera, Carrera S, and hell, even the almighty GT3. That is why it likely will not happen. CAR does not cite an internal source so it simply sounds like they are speculating here.

Additionally, Porsche is developing a new series of boxer four-cylinder engines. Those engines will find their way into the Cayman and Boxster. Does this motor not make more sense for the GT4 Cayman? Especially considering how sensitive 911 owner egos are to the Boxster and Cayman having more power which is why the cars have been artificially detuned for so long in the first place.

If the Cayman GT4 gets a twin turbo 3.8 liter flat-6 the Cayman will become a hell of a performance car and Porscheboost is all for it. It just seems very much out of character for what Porsche has traditionally done with the Cayman and Boxster. We will all find out soon enough!

I don't believe it. There are no indications of any way to feed intercoolers, or any additional cooling ducts to the engine bay. If the 3.8 turbo is the engine Porsche is using, it's not in that car.

I agree with you but how can a big publication just make an unsubstantiated claim like that? It's a joke.

Hmm....I don't know. I still think it will get the X50'd 3.8 DFI....that would be the absolute perfect power plant for this car. Rock solid, reliable, 431 hp is plenty, it'll fit just fine, it wouldn't present any problems, and in a potentially lighter and more aggressive version of the GTS with more tire and downforce...it would be a serious weapon. And it wouldn't cost them anything to develop.

I have no problem with that. We'll have to see what they do I don't think anyone but Porsche truly knows what is up right now.

An odd rumor, I agree that there doesn't seem to be enough cooling for a turbocharged motor and I also think it would be bizarre for Porsche to use the Turbo's 3.8 TT motor for a GT4, if they're going to use a 911 6 cylinder, why not the GT3's motor? A detuned version of that would be more suitable for such a car, at least in my opinion.

I don't get it none of this makes any sense. I just don't know why people are allowed to just post whatever they want and it's taken as gospel.

Remember when autoblog claimed the F80 M3 wouldn't have a manual?
