Wow, I was always under the impression that the stock exhaust piping was 57mm err, 2.25 inches in diameter....this sheds a new light on wanting to get an aftermarket exhaust for me lol....I might just cut out the secondary cats, get some vibrant 1792 resonators welded in, and cut out the x pipe to divorce the piping before the mufflers (effectively eliminating the pancaked section under the passenger side rear axle as well)

Is there anything I can modify on the stock exhaust to keep the subtle sound but free up the flow a bit? FYI, I have a 335 coupe.
Stock exhaust will hold you back. If the 'booming' sound is what you are concerned of aren't there valved solutions?

There are but I don't think it's worth it....everyone I talk to seems to say I'll lose maybe 10hp by staying with the stock exhaust, that's no big deal

Stock Exhaust is fine until you go to a Single Turbo or Vargas Stage 3s... Even then you just need to "modify" your midpipes & you'd be fine

Go with n55 midpipe which is cattless+DPs and I think it will be no problem with the stock exhaust.

Do you have this setup? Any pics or further explanation as to why I would do this?

Nope, I got the custome Dps and midpipe and SS muffler.
The n55 has no cats, only a resonator, while the n54 one has 2 catts and 1 resonator.

Interesting, and I assume it just bolts into place with minimal issues?

taht exhaust would flow every bit as much as your average "catback" exahust that sells for $1500+

i think those are 135i midpipes; not sure if the 335i n55 has the same setup....

i would be warry of doing that, because the e90 and e92 exhaust doesn't have flanges like the 135i does. it's probably easier and more reliable to just cut out the secondary cats and weld in an x-pipe or 2 straight sections.

135i's can easily switch midpipes. 335i's......not quite bolt-up

You just gave me a great idea and saved me quite a bit of money. Thank you! I think this is the route I'll likely take.

haha you are welcome! make sure you post up a review on it and take plenty of pictures! Im too scared to hack up my stock exhaust and be the guinea pig for this experiment! most likely just going to buy one of the quieter aftermarket systems (vrsf, ets, ae, ect), and if I don't like it, ill go back to the stock exhaust!

I've heard that the VRSF is rather obnoxious.

I'm going to talk to my shop friend to see what he thinks of cutting things up.

    Not at all.

The hpf exhaust is similar, but is very loud and drones a lot due to no muffler.

Just as an update, I went back to my stock exhaust after running the ets system for about 6 months and I can agree with most everyone else in here, I am enjoying the quietness for now. I can feel less power in the seat dyno department, but its a trade off you have to make if you want a quiet stock-like exhaust.
