What is faster in a straight line, the Porsche 918 Spyder or the Bugatti Veyron SS?

This is short, simple, and straight to the point. What wins a straightline race? Road and Track put the Veyron Super Sport (power increase to 1200 horsepower and 1100 lb-ft of torque) up against the brand new Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid on a drag strip. That must have been a tough workday to get through. The Porsche is lighter by 700 pounds with a curb weight of 3820 pounds to the Veyron SS 4500 curb weight.

This is a battle of modern hybrid technological efficiency against raw brute strength. So who wins? The 1200 horsepower quad turbo sixteen cylinder all wheel drive dual clutch monster wins. However, not by much. The Porsche 918 Spyder has the more efficient drivetrain with its two electric motors and 4.6 liter V8 (887 horsepower combined output) losing the drag race by only a tenth of a second.

Results in text form are here, expect a video from Road and Track once they are finished editing it but it is very cool of them to share the data early:

Two miles an hour slower for the 918 Spyder through the 1/4 mile and a tenth of a second less in elapsed time yet it matches the 0-60 figure thanks to the instant torque from the electric motors up front. It does this with 313 less horsepower, superior handling, a lower curb weight, and much greater fuel efficiency. The Porsche 918 is really the more impressive engineering achievement. Yes, the Veyron SS does have the higher top speed and will always ultimately 'win' on the top end so to speak.

Regardless, the McLaren P1 beats both of them and appears to be the king of the newest supercar crop.

Knowing Ferrari, they will try to inflate or conceal LaFerrari's performance numbers, or not divulge them for as long as possible.

Hmmm no, not weird. Not my personal opinion, but not weird, I can definitely see your view. I personally would be shopping for the P1 first, then the LaFerrari, then look at the others before making my decision...that is...if I were in the market. Would be nice to buy a car and actually be able to leave it completely alone and still feel fast.

The Veyron just looks like an overpriced sledgehammer now. The 918 just offers so much more finesse.

I think the P1 is king all around and I don't know what organs I need to sell to get one but I mean I wouldn't kick any of these out of the garage. The 918 and P1 are just orgasmic.

Just remember that the Veyron is essentially 90s tech. Still...this is amazing. The 918 is easily, for me, the car to have. I know it's heavier and less powerful than either the P1 or LF, but who cares. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life, sounds wonderful, has a wonderful interior with all the tech and luxury you could want, and is the cheapest by far. Also, it has the most impressive electric drivetrain. As Wired put it, it's like a grey Armani suit compared to the other two. I don't think I've ever wanted something so bad in my whole life. Good thing they aren't all sold yet..... :p Haha.

While I prefer the 918 myself, the LaFerrari seems like quite a machine. I wouldn't dismiss so readily.
