Audi's 4.2 FSI liter V8 will live on in the next generation R8 with 450 horsepower
This motor just will not die. The next generation R8 will of course be based on the new Lamborghini Huracan. The engines will carry over so the same V8 and V10 that exist now will into the next generation model. The V10 of course makes sense as it is the same engine the Huracan already has anyway. The 4.2 V8 though will carry over as well with a bump up to 450 horsepower essentially matching the Audi RS5 version of the motor.
It now becomes apparent why Audi did not bump the facelifted R8 to 450 horsepower from 420. The reason for that was so that now with the successor they could say the new model is more powerful. They could have bumped it to 450 all along considering that is what they already had with the RS5 4.2 V8 which is basically exact same motor.
With the next generation RS4/RS5 set to ditch this old 4.2 V8 engine many hoped the R8 would as well for an exciting turbocharged powerplant. Unfortunately, that will not happen. The Audi 4.2 FSI V8 soldiers on.

Meh. I can see where they're coming from with this. Audi don't want a V8TT R8 to compete with their V10 model and I guess VAG don't want it compete against what's coming from Lamborghini.
Otherwise the models would go to, what, a TT V6 and TT V8?

Yeah it's a tough spot there in here. I wondered why the facelift didn't get the 450 hp motor off the bat and well now it's clear why as the average buyer wouldn't understand why the 'new' R8 doesn't have more power.
Then again, if they did a 3.0 TT or even a supercharged V6 model the base R8 would all of a sudden become WAY more attractive.BRAND NEW IN BOX 991.2 standard/non-pse SPW cat bypass pipe for sale - $899 shipped

Good, it is actually a fantastic engine and fairly bulletproof. With everyone going FI, it is refreshing to see a car remain NA. Besides the Corvette, this could be in the future one of last NA V8 sports cars.

It's not a bad thing necessarily. The V10 is the way to go on this car though.

I still want the V10. My guy at Audi asked me to come have a look at a pre-owned one they got in, which had an Akrapovič exhaust, wow. This car now lives in my area, and you can hear it coming, haha!

why doesn't the R8 get both models turbo?
the RS6 had a freakin TT V10 FFS, why not the 'top' R8?
just a family wagon.. i mean.. it's cool, but it IS stupid.

Because they want the R8 to be sharp and responsive. It's a sports car. Honestly, it's a Gallardo/Huracan in drag.

The Huracan V10 has direct and port injection. I wonder if this system will end up in the R8 as well. AFAIK, the current R8 is direct injection only.

For the Huracan? http://www.lamborghini.com/en/models...610-4/explore/

Won't let me cut and paste to here. At least without grabbing the whole page, apparently.

I'm ok with it. Not too many great NA engines left. Definitely one of the best sounding V8s too.
