A comfy lap on the Nordschleife (summer 2012)

A bit of footage from 2012 - in summer when I did a few laps on the Nordschleife with some friends. On the one you see below I was supposed to act as a guide car for a friend who hasn't done many laps yet; a cousin of another friend was a passenger in my car, which is why there's some commentary to be heard on various sections of the 'Ring.

It's not a very fast lap, but I hope you'll still enjoy it.

Have fun! And sorry for the not-so-optimal video quality, I'll improve it soon (got to re-encode it differently).

Very cool. I grew up in a place where these roads were natural Click here to enlarge. not quite as complex however served the same purpose. The benefit of living in the middle of no where in the mountains.

Take a ring taxi --- I was in Germany a little over a year ago & they won't let rental vehicles on the track. Chances are you wouldn't even appreciate a lap around the track because you'll be too nervous with other experienced drivers flying past you & really not knowing the track/braking points/safe speeds for various sections/etc.

Yes you can. One of the is for example http://www.rent4ring.de/ or http://www.rsrnurburg.com/car-rental...ce-car-rentals. It's quite expensive though, for an M3 you have to count with around 1600 EUR for 10 laps plus a five-figure deposit (for insurance). I would rather take an inexpensive and easy-to-drive car like a Suzuki Swift or a VW Scirocco, and get somebody to show you the track - otherwise you won't be able to benefit from it anyway, as Benzy89 rightly said. It's so long that it takes you at least 100 laps to start knowing some of the lines.

^^I stand corrected about the rental situation -- I just remember that when we picked up the car from Sixt at the Frankfurt Airport they specifically said "No 'Ring". Then again, BMW also has the real BMW On Demand at the Munich HQ/Factory, so you might be able to rent an M3 from them & take it to the 'Ring (~5 hour drive; but you can rent On Demand cars from an hour up to a couple days). BUT if you happen to damage/crash, be prepared to pay BMW full retail for the repairs/car.

Here's the On Demand website for BMW Welt, you can rent up to a month in advance (found this out the hard way, wanted to drive an M3 on the autobahn & they were all rented out Click here to enlarge) : http://portal.bmw-on-demand.de/select.do?action=display

Yeah, for ordinary rental cars I can well imagine that they forbid you to drive on the 'Ring or other race tracks with them. If there's no such stipulation however, the insurance will cover an accident on the Nordschleife. That has been decided by several court cases and is established jurisprudence.
