    N54 Turbo Upgrade Pics

Hey guys, so I got these limited detail pics of an n54 turbo upgrade and I was wondering if anyone can help identify what they see here so far? I have pics of the compressor and turbine wheels only, but I'm still curious to know what's been done.

That's not an asr turbo. Turbine wheel is too small and the dividing wall is not shaved down. Also the compressor wheel is not the same as asr's stage 1 or 2 from what I've seen first hand. In addition, the flapper looks brand new, 'upgraded'... asr doesn't offer this because they found it is not the root cause of the rattle. RB offers a new flapper right? I wish I could show you guys some recent awesome pics but i'm being loyal/faithful and allowing it to be tested before it is fully released (ie: he lets me share).

From what I see, looks like a TD04 turbine based of the shape of the snout cant be exactly sure of the size and what might be some kind of Garrett compressor wheel. The blade profile looks a little different that the MHI wheels. Looks to be about the same size as the 15T it doesn't really look that big. They replaced the flapper and looked like the ported the hell out of the waste gate bypass hole almost to the very edge unless that's just the camera playing tricks on me. Would be nice to see where the CHRA meets the turbine housing to see what they did their to give a little more info.

Turbine looks on par with what is out there right now as well as what we are offering. Doesn't look small to me. BUT I WILL EDIT AND SAY. It is very hard to tell how big things are from pictures with nothing to compare them too side by side.

It's a stock TD03L Turbine clipped. Looks like was just a new set of turbos so thats why wastegate flapper looks new.

The compressor is a mystery. Hitatchi or Garrett maybe? Or maybe some no name wheel. Moot point either way as it is a compressor only upgrade, so better off just running new OEM turbos.

Rob knows his stuff but I don't agree, it looks to me like the housing is machined and that wheel doesn't match the profile of the stock wheel which is actually a TD025 not a TD03. I think they upgraded the turbine as well as compressor. As j said could be wrong it's hard to tell. But that's what I see.

Thanks for the info, I'll see if I'm able to get a pic of where the CHRA meets the Turbine housing and I'll ask for a pic of the bypass hole to see if it indeed is ported almost all the way to the edge.

Compressor probably is a Garret as mentioned by Tony and yourself, but that turbine most definitely is not stock and that flapper doesn't look stock either. The turbos aren't new as far I know so they probably added their own flapper.

Tony thanks for that bit on the stock turbine being a td025 and not a td03, I thought I was losing my mind when trying to compare specs and figure out what wheels are being used, it makes a bit more sense now. This turbine is definitely larger than a td025, but doesn't match up to anything I can find so far.

That pic really just seems to be the money shot of deception to make the turbine look larger.

After machining about 200+ of these housings I can tell you for certain that IF that turbine wheel has been changed the Exducer size was only increased by 1mm at best (RB increase is 6.5mm). The machine marks, casting marks, and their relation to the divider wall give it all away to me. You can also see the wheel is nearly the same size as the flapper itself, another large indicator. Therefore I am 99.9% sure it is the original TD03L (with additional clipping).

The porting on the wastegate hole appears to me to really just be a shadow. Since this platform doesn't experience boost creep, there would be virtually no benefit to porting the already largely sized wastegate hole further.

I do stand corrected on that flapper/WG arm being original though. It looks like some cheap cast chinese junk upon further inspections/comparisons to the OEMs.

As for the turbine sizing. Only in 1 application ever have I seen MHI incorrectly designate a turbine, and I like to believe that was a large anomaly considering all the circumstances around that situation. In this case the shaft dimensions and wheel specs definitely match figures from the TD02-TD03 family and they specifically call it TD03L so that is what it should be. I will just maintain that whatever it is in that range, it is too small to really care and I will let the trash can sort it out.

It is also worth noting that MHI already is using a 10T compressor from the TD04 family, which was already a stretch for the TD02-TD03 family Turbine discussed above. Putting an even larger compressor wheel than the 10T on that same shaft creates an even larger mismatch than the OEMs had already (ie. bad idea).

Just got a reply, it is a clipped TD04H I believe

What was it that made you arrive at the conclusion that it’s Chinese?
