BMW Motorrad honoring their history by re-releasing classic R 32 motorcycle for 90th anniversary - Why doesn't BMW do the same with automobiles?

Ok, this is quite simply just flat out cool. BMW Motorrad will honor their 90th Anniversary with a retro re-launch of sorts. The very first BMW motorcycle in 1923 was called the R 32. It featured an air-cooled, horizontally opposed (boxer) two-cylinder 4-stroke motor. The new version of the R 32 will feature a motor with the same specs but updated output/tuning. The bike and motor will obviously be updated with modern engineering and manufacturing processes when it is produced next year.

This begs the question, why not do the same with BMW cars? Imagine a limited re-release of say the E30 M3 with modern production technologies incorporated. Updating the classic S14 motor, the chassis, suspension, and brakes. Sure sounds awesome doesn't it? Just like what BMW Motorrad is doing.

It is somewhat perplexing car companies never tap into their catalog of what they have already produced. Press release from BMW Motorrad below.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 13, 2012...In his speech at the international motorcycle show EICMA in Milan, BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller announced that BMW Motorrad will be presenting a new model with air-cooled 'boxer' engine in 2013 as a special way of marking the "90 years of BMW Motorrad" anniversary.

As long ago as 1923, the very first BMW motorcycle - the BMW R 32 – provided what was to become the genetic basis for the BMW Motorrad boxer series over nine decades: an air-cooled, 2-cylinder 4-stroke 'boxer' engine with longitudinally mounted crankshaft and shaft drive to the rear wheel. Always combined with innovative technology and thrilling design - and with one priority above all else: sheer riding pleasure.

The new, distinctive motorcycle to be produced next year will express the genes of 90 years of BMW Motorrad combined with emotional styling and innovative technology to create a new, multifaceted vehicle concept.

The model designation and date of the market launch will be announced at a later date.

I would love to buy an E30 M3 with modern technology!

It makes a ton of sense to do with cars as well.

E30 is just what immediately came to mind. They could do it with anything though.

Hell Ferrari would make a fortune doing this.

Agreed! My dream is to one day fully restore an E30 M3 to Sport Evo standard. If only BMW would re-release it, haha. That would make things easier, yet still exciting!

Looks beautiful. However, going back to remanufacturing old cars. I wonder how much Ford or the company Ford supported to rebuild the old Mustang coupes.
