    Electric M3 Scorches Pikes Peak

All you hear is the squealing of the tires. There's no straight six in EV West's 1995 M3, set to run at this year's Pikes Peak, just a 420 horsepower all-electric drivetrain.
It's just a small San Diego shop that's running this car, and we can't wait to see them move on from some sideways practice to racing to the clouds in Colorado.

This is the 2012 Pikes Peak entry for EV West. 1995 BMW M3 (currently) running on a Net-Gain HV11 and a Evnetics Shiva. For more information please visit evwest.com or visit us on Facebook at facebook.com/electricVehicleWest

It's cool for what it is. But IMO I think it's boring. No sound, no shifting, no rush from a turbo... bleh

This is an interesting topic, likely front page worthy. I'll look into it tomorrow (my tomorrow).

No doubt, but it makes no noise and has zero top end (in lieu of having maximum low end)

Quick question. Why are there no gearboxes for electric motors? Or they are rare. And couldn't you adapt an electric motor to a conventional gearbox somehow?

It's because of the high instant torque that electric motors make. Gearboxes can't hold it together under such conditions for long.

There are gearboxes. The issue likely is the torque and RPM.
