how to quickly test actuation on bmw e46 2005

hi, there! How do I tell if its switch or actuator is bad on my bmw e46 2005? And how do I quickly test actuation? I found a smart tool named autosnap gd860 at uobd2.com, but it seems to be a comprehensive diagnostic equipment, I think it is not suitable for personal use. Can you recommend me a regular scan tool?
