    2012 W212 E550 to get M278 twin turbo V8 with 402 horsepower - E class will offer two turbo V8 options

Hot on the heals of the reveal that the E63 AMG would be making the switch to the M157 turbo V8, Mercedes has announced that the E550 for 2012 will receive the M278 4.7 liter direct injected V8 turbo. This motor produces 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque at 13 psi. What is interesting is that the BMW 550i produces about the same horsepower from 4.4 liters at only 10 psi. Audi will also be putting a turbo V8 in its upcoming S6 so the competition in this segment is going to be quite interesting.

FWIW Audi's new TT V8 will displace 4.0L and have DI. It uses another version of the SIMOS ecu's we've all come to love. Click here to enlarge

It will be single turbo for the S6, TT for the RS6, same 4.0 liter displacement for both.

Interesting that the N63 appears to be more efficient. It likely has higher compression than the M278.

Interestingly enough, the M278 is 10.5:1 and higher compression than the N63.

I don't know the internals, I think MHP said they were not forged.

fwiw, there will be no RWD E550 available for sale in the US market. It will be in 4Matic AWD only. And there will be no Airmatic on the E550, either standard or option (it will have the E350 steel suspension.)

I have the internal MBUSA product sheet for 2012 if anybody wants the specifics of what will be available (including options) for 2012 (E Class platform) in the USA.

There will be an E63 wagon (estate) available for sale in the USA in September 2012 with the new motor.

What? Only 4matic 550's? That sounds kind of weird, where is this info coming from?

It's the official 2012 E platform product sheet for dealership management. I'd post it here but the .pdf file exceeds the file size limit on the forum.

In the meantime I'll email you a copy. It's a bit of an odd format because it was used as a presentation to management. But you'll figure it out (it's like a quasi-flow chart sort of thing.) Note on the first page: +E63 Wagon -E550 2WD (that simply means added product and removed product for 2012.)
