PTF (ProTuning Freaks) and HCP who develops maps for them teased BMW B-Series engine ECU access. The B48 and B58 motors have kept tuners out but they were recently cracked in Russia by tuner K8 Strasse and as is usual the crack is spreading out to tuners worldwide.

PTF and HCP are claiming a misleading 'world first' here as they were not the first but if you want to get technical maybe they can claim a world first in the US market.

Either way what is important to focus on is OBD-II flashing will be here shortly for the B48 and B58 motors. This bodes well for the upcoming S58 as well which hopefully will use similar ECU architecture but BMW now knowing their computer/software was hacked into will likely patch it because they are no fun.

The teaser photo here shows the B48 MG1 tamper code can be removed which means BMW should in theory not know the ECU was flashed. Then again, if the ECU logs parameters they will likely be able to figure it out from large variable changes but this should provide superficial protection from being flagged by a dealer. If you want to tune, you should be prepared to lose your warranty.

It is just a matter of time now before various OBD-II tuning options hit the market for the B-Series motors.
