Dreaded 30BB code
I recently installed a FFTEC 600 kit and was out trying to see if I had fixed all boost leaks and to finally get an accurate log. I hit the gas WOT and a loud noise that came from the engine. I immediately looked in rearview mirror expecting to see white smoke billowing out of the exhaust, but nothing. The engine sounded like it was trying to rip itself apart. The CEL popped on, but the 1/2 power light did not. I immediately pulled over before my car died on the highway and started to check codes. 30BB and misfire 4,5,6. 30BB is the DME internal failure code for injectors covering 4,5,6. Cleared the codes and 30BB came back. I was 30 minutes from my house so I called a tow truck as I was not going to attempt to limp my car home.
While waiting for tow truck I started to research the 30BB code. Found a diy on another forum and felt a little relief. There are 6 mosfet transistors on the DME (MSD80) that are the weak point of the DME. Supposedly its not tuning related but they seem to go out once you add any kind of piggyback/flash with a significant increase in power. I ordered replacement mosfet and when I received them they were the wrong ones. I ordered another set of 12 (insurance) from digi-key FNB14N30 and they were a perfect match.
Next issue was getting the old ones off and new ones put on. I have done very very basic soldering, but never on anything that cost $1200 to replace so I attempted to find a "pro". I took the board to a computer/radio repair shop and they assured me that they could swap the parts out no problem. Great. 6 hours later I call to check on the progress and they state that the mosfets are impossible to get off and they stopped before they did any damage. I was not going to give up with out getting the parts replaced. I found a guy on a local racing forum that said he could do it. I take it to him and he walks me through about how he is going to replace everything. I leave it with him feeling a little more confident about it. By the time I make it back to my house (1 hour) he is calling me and I am expecting the worse. He tells me all mosfets have been replaced. Went back picked it up and brought it home installed it. I replaced all my plugs, coils, and battery (it was time). Reset the battery adaptation with bavtech tool. Started the car and it ran like normal actually probably a little smoother thanks to new plugs and coils.
Cliff Note: 30BB code can be fixed with correct mosfets and competent person with a solder gun. Coils and plugs usually have to be replaced, but injectors were not harmed. I will add pictures later tonight.07 335i FFTEC 600
