F10 M5 BMS Tune Help?!

Hey everyone,
i just traded in my m3 two weeks ago for a 2014 M5 and am about to begin the modding. Besides minor cosmetics, downpipes + tune is a necessity. I am leaning toward the BMS piggyback.

When doing some research a month or so ago I thought I remembered reading issues people were having when WOT with downpipes + BMS piggyback. Something about the fuel getting cut off but maybe I'm mistaken. Can someone shed some light on this or any negatives to look out for with this potential setup? I just had my first service done today and am eager to step up the power game.

Our tuning is working flawlessly. At the last shift sector we had 4-5 M5s doing repeated runs to 140mph without issue. Including our development 2014 M5.

Some cars appear to throw a code at higher RPM with downpipes though. Those who have the problem are not sophisticated enough yet to read the codes with a BT cable so they just troll around the forums complaining they have codes. Some day one of them will read the code and then hopefully that will lead to a fix.

Would these codes be taken care of with the can tool you guys offer to address the CEL from the downpipes?

Nope, that does not disable the CEL system. Only purges annoyance codes. Real codes continue to show a light. Generally if you get a code your car is broken and something needs to be fixed.

There's no rhyme or reason to these codes? Just some cars? Or something wrong with their particular cars?

This is the first I have heard of this.

Okay so if my car shows a code at higher rpm it'll stick around and I should just send the code over to you for further evaluation? Seems to be an isolated issue...

Any time you get a code you should read it with a BT cable.

He said a bunch of trolls. Nobodys actually come forward with codes to diagnose the issue properly.

It's probably some yokels running 87 octane gas and wondering why it's misfiring at 6k rpm.

I don't know what the codes are as they won't read them. But the 2-3 guys I've heard of who have this issue are running downpipes, have it come up with the stock tune, and it comes at high speeds like 130mph. I'm not sure if all have the CP but I know at least 2 do. The CP runs overly rich up top which may be to blame. But until an enthusiast starts having the issue who knows..

I have the CP. Hopefully I won't encounter this issue but I'll be sure to read the codes if it happens. I'm sure if it was happening to all or a lot of the guys with the CP there would be more posted on it, but then again the community isn't exactly big. I'm assuming some of the guys that were running had the CP?

Looking forward to seeing how the car runs once done up!

I *may* be experiencing this now. It's either this or my CAN tool isn't working. Last week I had my DPs installed with can tool (no BMS tune yet). I drove about 1k miles without any CEL but today the CEL symbol on my dash came on however no warning came on the I drive and under check control messages it says everything is fine. I don't know exactly when it came on as I said I didn't hear anything and no big warning came on. Does anyone know if in the other cases I don't have a BT cable but can purchase one. In the meantime I'm sure a code read by my dealer would help? I can swing by there tomorrow. I guess if it's emissions related it's the CAN not functioning but if something else it could be this...

Since you deleted your cats I take it it takes some time for the CEL to come on. It's no big deal and the car should run just fine.

Don't go to your dealer. They will know you have pipes. They aren't your friends. They want to screw you over.

Just delete the code if it bothers you with a tune.

The issue is that the CAN tool I bought and have plugged in is supposed to take care of the CEL from coming on. It only purges "annoyance codes" as Terry stated above...such as the emissions code from DPs. So now with the CEL on it means that either my car has an actual problem (as Terry mentioned above it doesn't disable the CEL system so a light would mean something besides an annoyance) or that the CAN tool isn't functioning properly. The only way to find out what's going on is by finding what exact codes are coming up. If it's not emissions codes than this may be the problem that some CP guys are experiencing although from what I recall that was more of the car going into limp mode or something more serious.

I'm lucky enough to have an awesome relationship with my dealer. They kept my warranty AND maintenance program on my AA supercharged M3! They even went above and beyond that at certain times...no need for details :music-rockout:.

All about building the right relationship. I have two very local dealerships I woke with and they are not only cool with my mods but love seeing them! It helps that one of the techs is a huge enthusiast and has some some crazy e30 builds.

I've stopped by on several occasions for them to just check codes when I was having O2 sensor issues with the AA kit and when I wanted to get adaptations cleared.

As I would prefer to do this on my own, do you guys know if this BT cable / software can clear DME & DCT adaptations? I believe this would be useful to do granted I wasn't driving hard during break in period and now I would want everything to adapt to hard driving. Is there something else better/cheaper that does the same thing? I vaguely remember missing out on a group buy for something similar that was very inexpensive.

I'll call BT tomorrow as I didn't see F10 supported as well. I figured maybe it wasn't listed but with Terry mentioning BT cable it should work.

BT w/ beta software works great with the F10 including M5, 550, etc.

Hey guys, so these are the codes I am throwing:

Appears my CAN tool isn't working then, correct?

Question with the CAN tool - do all codes need to be cleared prior to plugging it in for it to work? I would assume not but I did drive with it unplugged the other day for literally 5 seconds (backing it up) and then the CEL came on the next day at some point.

Your guys help is much appreciated.

The CAN Tool has been discontinued. If you purchased it from us you can just send it back for a refund.

On the codes, problem code looks to be 120208, boost pressure too high. What tune/settings are being used currently?

I am actually not running any tune. Car just has downpipes and competition package, nothing more. We did try to install a BMS tune on it last week but it wouldn't work and was determined to be possibly defective. Could this have been an old code from when that was in? Thanks for the help

That's certainly possible. Were you the guys who installed it on the MAF instead of the MAP and fried the box? :) If so I know a new box was sent along for it.

Clear all codes and see what you can recreate.

It's possible, I'm not sure to be honest - would have to check with the shop. I'm not the best with the technical stuff...actually far from the best lol. Hence why I leave my work in the hands of the experts. All I know is that the new unit has arrived and is going on my car Thursday. Can't wait!

I did show that specific code to a knowledgable friend and he said that the catless DPs could open the turbos up to boost and that may explain that code?

However, Im assuming that it isn't a code you see with just DPs based on your reply.

As you recommended we are clearing the codes today and putting the CAN tool back on. Let's see what happens. I'll order the BT cable so I may check codes easier.

At least it doesn't appear to be anything serious.

Update...
The guy that does my coding tried to clear the codes for me remotely but my CEL remained on. I turned off the car and plugged in the CAN tool. Was driving today and noticed the CEL was gone.

Not sure what to make of this. I don't think the remote code clearing worked as the light should have gone immediately off. I haven't heard of a restart being required. Maybe the CAN tool started working again?

Only time will tell I guess with the CAN tool. I'm probably going to sell it (if working) or return it if it doesn't work. I miss having my p3 gauge which takes up the OBD port. I love the features and I can clear codes with it just by pressing two buttons. Also the CEL isn't really annoying as it doesn't pop up on the I drive when starting up.

Update. Went for a drive today and the CEL came on. Was doing well in the triple digits during the drive but I believe the light came on 10 minutes after this when I was at low speeds. Again, it was just the CEL symbol and no warning or I drive message. I unplugged and plugged in the CAN tool but it stayed. Went to a mini meet and was revving the engine then parked the car. Went to start the car and CEL gone. Not sure if it went away while turning on to rev.

Seems like the CAN tool is working sometimes....not sure what to make from this.

The CAN Tool is not going to block a CEL from coming up. If you get a CEL, read it using a BT cable, and use the code to resolve the physical issue with the vehicle.

yeah I understand it just takes care of annoyance ones, as I posted the codes my car was throwing on the first page. There appears to be no real physical issue to resolve with the car. If an "important" CEL came on it wouldn't just go off by itself, right?

Ordered my BT cable so it's on the way. I didn't clear any codes but no CEL is on anymore hence why I think it's the CAN tool taking care of the annoyances, but just not doing it all the time as the CEL will come on every so often then go off.

Are you trying to use the BT cable to disable the codes from coming on permanently?

Just wanted to give some updates...

CAN tool has been working perfectly. I guess I just needed to hold down the button on the tool or unplug/plug. I didn't have directions when getting it as it was off the site.

***I was able to produce this error that people claim is happening at WOT at high speeds. I have downpipes & BMS piggyback. Today when WOT in Mexico right at 150mph a "drivetrain malfunction error" came on. The car wouldn't let me downshift with the paddles but I was able to with the shifter. While in Mexico with just downpipes & after getting the BMS installed I have done 130-140 dozens of times without issue. Didn't go up to 150 though so I can't say specifically what may be the cause. Maybe this was just isolated or the extra 10mph made the difference. After simply turning the car off and on everything was fine and there was no code to read. It's such a minor "issue" that it doesn't really matter.

My dynos from stock, to downpipes to downpipes & BMS should be up soon. On a mustang dyno and the BMS run was done in warmer weather (approx 30 degrees warmer). We saw great tq gains and not too bad HP gains. We couldn't dyno the car in 5th gear because of the speed limiter I was told as it would mess up at the end of the dyno. How are some of you guys dynoing in 5th? From my understanding 5th is the most accurate representation of the power of this car. I would be willing to get on a dynojet once this is figured out.

Dyno runs in 5th gear end at 6200rpm. While runs in 4th gear can go to redline.

Quick question: I notice in the instructions for the BMS unit it says to connect to the software after installing as the BMS unit is preconfigured for N63 settings. The only setting to change is "Future Use 0-100" from 0 to 1 as mentioned in the manual. What exactly does this setting do? We actually did not do this after installation as I wasn't aware of it until now that I am reading the instructions. I believe my tuner thought it was already preconfigured for my M5.

Thanks Terry - am loving the extra power. Car felt smooth to begin with but now even better. The dynos to be posted show a much smoother graph compared to stock.

Just got my laptop successfully hooked up and I guess the shop didn't realize variables had to be changed. Based on the settings it read my boost over stock was at 2.25 when it should have been at 3 and as mentioned above future use was set to 0 instead of 1.

These are now corrected. Note to self to read the manual myself in case shop needs a reminder...

Curious as to how big a difference these settings will make.

But the setting change is due to the s63's 3.5 bar MAP sensors.

Any update on what's going on with this car? Was really enjoying this :p
