Another track day...this time at Putnam Park. Fun little track that is very safe (no walls) and faster than it looks. Easy to learn and was turning ok times within a couple of sessions.
Only frustrating thing is that my oil cooler has taken so much abuse from tracking (melted rubber from the tires gets thrown in there) that I would start losing power as oil temps climbed to unsafe levels. Looks like I will need to get that custom oil cooler sooner than I thought! This is probably my fault since I removed the grill a long time ago since my wheels rubbed on it.
Oil cooler totally destroyed:

Eh no big deal. You get to upgrade the oil cooler.
any updates?
Yep!
So I finally dealt with the oil cooler - did a custom dual core solution with inline tstat from Turn In Concepts. Here is some pics of the install progress - mesh was added later to prevent rocks from damaging the oil cooler again and to neaten up the install.

Had a great time out at Watkins Glen last weekend. Watkins is a truly amazing track, and I can't wait to be back out there. Was my first time at the track, but car was having issues misfiring and pulling boost. Was really down on power, turned out to be plugs but I didn't figure it out until after I got home, but wound up missing a few sessions due to that and rain. Even so I still hit 2:23 with an instructor in the car and traffic. I figure solo with full power and pushing harder the car should be good for around 2:13-2:14. Here is a video from one of the runs. PCA are great people but really wish they would be less conservative with run groups...

A fun couple laps of the rain session...was a bit scary on bald Nitto Nt01 rcomps. Car got sideways really easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_hlfxCMZh8&feature=youtu.be
You have convinced me to get this once I have a kid. Unique, super practical, the perfect sacrifice for extra space/family vehicle/etc.
So if anyone's wife ever says you need to get rid of your 1 or 3 series for an Outback (or similar), here is the perfect option.
Keep pushing man! Love it!
The other interesting thing I found out is that with an invisihitch brand tow hitch attached, the max tow weight is 4400lbs. With the bigger brakes, tires, stiffer suspension, oil cooler, and radiator I have done, the X1 should be more than enough to trailer a trailex aluminum open car trailer with a dedicated track car, spare tires, tools, etc.
Depending on how business goes, next year might see me picking up a dedicated track car to share track duties with the X1. It is on my bucket list to trailer a dedicated race car to an event, kill it, and then for the last few sessions unhook the tow vehicle and let her rip all over again ;)
haha that would be pretty awesome.
OP, how's the car doing
I just signed up for one lap of america for this year! We have big plans and will be gunning for a top 10 overall finish. My co-driver and co-sponsor is Turn In Concepts; they have built cars for One Lap and Pikes Peak before (#4 overall at One Lap) and we will be doing in-house carbon aero, pure turbo stage 2, 100% e85, and 3 way remote canister coilovers.
Going to be a huge challenge to get the car fully sorted in time but I can't wait!
Love this! Can't wait to see how you do with One Lap! Good luck!
Thanks guys! I made a website where you can follow along: www.onelapx1.com
I am on so many different forums it will be easier to just have a centralized location to update things. We plan on having live-streaming during the event including both on-track and the transit stages, and will put a blog update on everything we do to the car to get ready for the event.
So I just picked up a BMW X1 28i M Sport and I want to start with upgrades and mods but I have no clue where to start, any suggestions?
I have a 35i so it will be a little bit different, but you can see a full parts list of my car here: http://www.onelapx1.com/parts-list.html
I recommend you start with a JB4, downpipe, and intake. The next step would be a good set of coilovers, in my opinion.
+1 I agree, wait at least 1200 miles before.. But I learned a few things.
4cylinder especially the N20 from BMW doesn't like intakes at all, infact it provides no benefits..
Get a BMC Air-Filter or K&N Dry Drop-In you'l be fine.
But definitely Downpipes and a tune.
