turns out the pistons in S65 are cast aluminum just like S54 and S85; see pg 49 of the BMW after sales training on the e90 M3
it's also interesting how they use a normal oil pressure VANOS system instead of high pressure on S54 and S85.
also keep in mind the MSS70 on the Z4M has 64million CPS in it's DME where MSS54 was 25 m.

Hoping to contribute, I found this write up by the American Iron and Steel Institute, which highlights several different engines (circa 2004), and on page 5 they talk about the S54.
