I think the pistons are cast aluminum. Rods and crank are forged, I'll update.

that's why I posted. S65 pistons are cast, the crank and rods are forged just like the other M engines

not just M engines either...
yeah, my S54, M54, and M42 all benefit from forged internals. good stuff!

This was a great read. I really appreciate the time you took to put this together. It has been a great resource for research I'm conducting prior to an e46 purchase.

Hoping to contribute, I found this write up by the American Iron and Steel Institute, which highlights several different engines (circa 2004), and on page 5 they talk about the S54.

I cant post links yet, otherwise id share. If you google "The World's Top 10 Best Engines Use Steel", it is the 1st link to the pdf.

For those interested, here is the link: The World's Top 10 Best Engines Use Steel. (This is specific to the point in time which it was developed. Therefore, some of the world's favorites were not in production at this point, which means to you that they are not listed (ie 2JZ, SR20DET to name a few).

- bucket tappets from the M54?

makes me wonder about the info on the other engines.
