McLaren tuning value? $160-$180k 2016 McLaren P13 coming to challenge the 911 Turbo and AMG GT
McLaren wants to increase their sales volume. The manufacturer produces niche high performance sports cars but only has two models available for sale, the 650S and the hyper exclusive P1. A P15 that will fit in between the two aforementioned cars is coming and so is an 'entry level' P13.
The P13 will compete with the 911 Turbo and also the upcoming AMG GT sports car. The target price range is somewhere around $160-$180k so hardly cheap but a value in the McLaren world.
A value especially in the tuning sense as the car is expected to have the same M838T twin turbo 3.8 liter V8 used in the P1 and MP4-12C/650S. All McLaren models are expected to get a variant of this motor. For the P13 that means a detuned version in the 500 horsepower range.
Why is this a good thing? Because if McLaren detunes it with software alone a tune only P13 should be every bit the MP4-12C/650S equal in acceleration and capability. With the same shared transmission the cars will offer virtually the same drivetrain with the styling, chassis, suspension, and weight being the main differences.
McLaren is adding models to the lineup and this is a great thing for enthusiasts and the McLaren brand as a whole. It looks like there is finally a serious alternative to Ferrari and Lamborghini with the performance to back up the looks.
